Hyottoko's Poutine From Biiru

Today, I planned to go get a "Hyottoko's Poutine" at Biiru, which is a Japanese bistro.
I don't remember when I found this spot, but at least when my husband was in Montreal till the end of July, 2014, it's not open or I might have missed it.
Biiru is how we pronounce "beer" in Japanese.
イザカヤ (Izakaya) is kind of a combined establishment of a bar and a restaurant.
On a brick wall, a Sumo wrestler was drawn.
This bistro is closed on Sundays and Mondays while Poutine Week had started on Sunday, so I hit the spot at a little bit after 11:30 AM when the lunch time started.
By the door, there're 4 masks which are popular and sold at Maturi (festivals).
From the right, Hyottoko, Kato-chan (a Japanese comedian's famous character), Ebisu and Okame.
Bottles of Gekkeikan (月桂冠), a Japanese sake brand, were used for lantern shades.
I asked if a Japanese person wrote those letters, and an owner said yes, and the calligrapher's mother is a Japanese artist.
When I said I'm a Japanese and can read those, he asked me if there's any mistake as a joke.
I didn't see Poutine Week's poutine on the lunch menu, so I asked if they had, and he said I was the first person to order and try it as they're close on Sundays and Mondays, and asked me to give him a feedback about the poutine.
The bar counter had various alcoholic beverages.
And the handle of a beer-server was a Japanese sword's hilt.
Chopsticks and paper napkins were in tins, and each had Maneki-Neko with a left pow up.
There're 3 different cats and they're calico cat, black cat and golden cat.
In about 10 minutes, Hyottoko's Poutine was served.
It's topped with cut seaweeds and they had a nice scent of ocean.
The fries were very thick and many of them was long.
Underneath the mount of seaweed, there're Teriyaki glazed pork shoulder, and they're sweet, salty, flavorful, tender and juicy without pork odor.
Tempura flakes (photo below), negi (green onions), white and black sesames, and Togarashi (hot pepper) powder were sprinkled.
It's described as miso gravy, but it didn't have the characteristic fermented scent found in miso paste, and it's much lighter than I thought.
The fries were all sweet potatoes.
The outside was crispy and the inside was smooth, moist, and sweet.
Cheese curds were medium size and cold so that most of them had squeakiness.
When I had all the ingredients at once, I tasted various flavors like sweet, salty, ocean scent, fragrant scent of sesame and a little heat from hot pepper.
This poutine can be sweet and salty, but I think hot pepper powder really spiced up the poutine and worked as refresher.
The smiling owner was talkative and other employees were also nice and asked me how everything was, and it's a good atmosphere.
I'd love to try lunch and dinner menu next time.

今日はBiiruという日本食ビストロの「ひょっとこプーティン」を食べると決めていた。
このお店をいつ見つけたか記憶にないけれど、少なくとも旦那が2014年7月末まで住んで
いた時にはなかったと思う（それか見逃していたかもしれない）。
レンガの壁には相撲取りが描かれていた。
入り口の近くには日本の国旗型のライトがあった。
日曜日からプーティンウィークが始まったけれど、このお店は日・月曜が定休日なので、
ランチ営業開始時間の11時半過ぎにお店に行った。
ドアのすぐ近くにはお面が4つ並んでいて、右からひょっとこ、カトちゃん、えびす、
おかめだった。
店内には日本的なものが多く、書道も沢山あった。
月桂冠の瓶がライトの傘に使われていた。
オーナーに聞いた所、日本人の母親を芸術家にもつ息子が手がけたそうで、私が日本人
なので読めると伝えると「どこかに間違いはあった？」と冗談で聞いてきた。
また、プーティンウィークのプーティンがランチメニューには載っていなかったので、
あるか聞いてみると「うちは日・月曜休みで君が初めて食べるから、感想を聞かせてね」
と話やすい雰囲気の人だった。
バーカウンターには沢山の種類のお酒が置いてあり、ビールサーバーの取っては日本刀の
柄になっていた。
お箸と紙ナプキンは左手を上げた招き猫がデザインされた缶に入っていて、三毛猫、
黒猫、金色の猫の3種類があった。
10分ほどでひょっとこプーティンが出された。
上には刻み海苔が乗っていて磯の良い香りがし、ポテトはかなり太めに切られていて、
ほとんどが長かった。
山盛りの海苔の下にはテリヤキ風ポークショルダーがあり、甘辛く柔らかくジューシーで
豚臭さがなく美味しかった。
天かす、ネギ、白胡麻、黒胡麻、赤唐辛子の粉が振られていた。
味噌グレービーと書かれていたけれど、味噌特有の発酵臭はなくあっさりしていた。
ポテトは全てサツマイモで、外はカリッとして中はしっとり滑らかで甘かった。
チーズカードは中くらいの大きさで冷たく、キュッとした歯応えが残っていた。
全ての具材を一緒に食べると、甘さ、塩辛さ、磯の香り、胡麻の香ばしさ、唐辛子の軽い
辛さなど色々な風味が味わえた。
このプーティンは「甘辛い」と表現できると思うけれど、唐辛子の粉末がかかっていた
ことでプーティンの味が締まり、すっきりしていた。
笑顔で接してくれるオーナー、味はどうだったか聞いてくれる優しい雰囲気の店員たちで
居心地が良かった。
次回は昼食、夕食のメニューも食べてみたいと思う。
