Only The Top Of The Melon Pan.

(Japanese follows. /

Melon Pan is one of the popular Japanese sweet breads everyone knows.
It consist of a bread with biscuit dough on the top with sprinkled sugar.

Other Melon Pan I've reviewed.
Peko-chan's Melon Pan
Hokkaido Melon Pan

Kiwami No Melon Pan

Yamazaki Baking Co., Ltd. launched the top part only called "メロンパンの皮焼いちゃい
(Melon Pan No Kawa Yaichaimashita.)" without any press release on October 1, 2014 in Kansai area only.
The direct translation is "We baked only the top of the melon pan."

Since the launching date, so many consumers went crazy for the "secret" new item and many of them didn't know it's only available in only selected areas and went to various shops to ask around, like in Tokyo.

Yamazaki has different production through distribution in respective areas, and that's why this product was solely sold in Kansai area first where they created this.
I wasn't in Japan so that there's no way I would fly to Osaka just for this from New York, but luckily, they made it nationwide from October 28 after learning the product had so much potential and my husband could buy one for me.

It's about 12cm (4.7 inch) in diameter, so it's much smaller than regular melon pans' biscuit.

The surface looked very similar to ordinary melon pan without lines, and I saw a lot of shiny sugars throughly on the top.

The bottom looked like a cookie with brown and crispy texture.

My mom happened to find this and she said it's crispy outside but soft inside, so I kind of had an idea what it'd be like, and the texture was exactly what she told me.
The bottom was fragrant and the crispiest, the top was crunchy and rough with sugars and also had slightly soft texture, and the inside was moist.
This biscuit is thicker than that of regular melon pan, I enjoyed not only the crispiness but the soft and moist part inside, besides rich butter flavor.
It's cheap and only 76 yen, and still some shops run out of this product, so I recommend you buy it as soon as you see it.
It contains 245kcal, it's pretty high...

Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
Keema Curry

Chicken keema curry inside.

It was quite good and had really nice spice flavor.

Gourmet Box usually isn't spicy at all though it has a warning, but surprisingly this one was a little bit spicy. (Only just a bit and not spicy enough for me!)

Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
Gyoza

Gyoza (pork dumpling) with chili oil.

The package warms it's spicy hot but I couldn't taste any chili oil ;(
Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
Karaage with Salty Sauce

Karaage is fried chicken.

This contains a piece of fried chicken with salty sauce and naganegi onion.

The sauce was pretty good but I wish it was white meat, so I didn't really enjoy the meat itself.

Chou is a French word for cabbage and like Chanel, it's pronounced as "shoe." Pan de Chou is a name of sweet snack bread produced by Yamazaki collaborating with Fujiya.
"Pan de Chou" made me imagine this is some kind of cream puff bread.

We call cream puff "chou cream," which is a combination of French and English.
On the package, you can see Peko-chan.
She's a image character of Fujiya, a confectionery manufacturer in Japan.
Fujiya's one of the popular products is "Milky" which is a sweet milk chewy candy.
And this bread contains the famous milky flavored cream inside.

Underneath the picture of bread, there's a description about the filling and bread.
"Fujiya Milky, a condensed milk cream is poured into the bread dough topped with chou dough. After baking, they put soft milk cream."

Sounds seriously sweet.
If you've had Milky candy, you can easily think of the sweetness.
I've had the candy before and I love sweets and carbs, so as soon as I saw this package and read the description, there's no way leaving it on the shelf.

As the filling is pretty much made from sugary condensed milk and also chou dough, it's 364 kcal per bread.
I saw the ingredients list starting with condensed milk. It was actually surprising as I thought the product used the most in it was flour/bread wheat.
The bread was pretty tall and about 8cm height. (3.2inch)

From the top, it looks so yellow.
I bet this is the chou part mentioned on the package.
There's little shiny spot in the middle, and it was the milky cream coming out from inside.
The manufacturer already knew it'd happen, so in the package, there's another layer or soft film right above the top of this bread and it was easy to slide this out.

I carefully had a first bite since the label says the filling is really soft and liquid and it'd possibly spill out.
However, no cream I could see.
All I could see and felt was soft and fine texture.

One more bite, here it comes.
Milky cream (white one inside) and soft milk cream (yellow one).
The yellow cream was supposed to be milk cream, but tasted like custard cream with its rich flavor and texture.
But after taking this photo, I had to have third bite quickly since the cream inside was seriously running over!

It was 99 JPY and seemed to be a new line.
If you're interested in sugary bread for snack, I highly recommend you use a plate or eat this directly from the plastic package.

Gourmet Box: Gyoza
Gyoza (pork dumpling) with chili oil.

The package warms it's spicy hot but I couldn't taste any chili oil ;(

About an year ago, they already launched same gyoza bun without spicy oil, but as this one wasn't spicy-hot at all, it was basically a same product with different package.
Lunch Pack Collection:
Nectar Mix Cream

Uses purée and fruit juice cream of Fujiya "Nectar Mix."

It's only fruit flavor cream and it'd have been nicer if it contained fruit chunks.

This contains a piece of fried chicken with salty sauce and naganegi onion.
The sauce was pretty good but I wish it was white meat.

Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
Melty Cheese Pizza
Pizza sauce and 2 kinds of cheese inside.

Heated up and it tasted like convini's steamed bun.

Couldn't tell what kind of cheese they used.

Pizza sauce was a little bit too sweet.

CoCo Ichiban-ya Curry Rusk / Coco

Yamazaki launched curry flavored rusk made from bread crust.

It's supervised by CoCo Ichiban-ya, a Japanese curry chain.

Yamazaki has collaborated with CoCo Ichiban-ya so often; for Lunch Pack and Gourmet Box.

According to the package, they used CoCo Ichi's special "super-hot" spices.
*We abbreviate the name into "CoCo Ichi" when we say.

This rusk is produced spicy and flavorous as Coco Ichi's popular pork curry.

On the back side of the package, there's a drawing to show which part of bread is used.
The package was about 10cm x 23cm more or less (= about 4inch x 9inch).

I expected there'd be a lot of curry rusk but there wasn't.
Maybe they intentionally made the bag big enough to have air in to prevent the crispy rusks from breaking apart?
The rusk was really crispy and had curry flavor.

However, I couldn't really tell if it resembles CoCo Ichi's pork curry as I've never had their pork broth curry but only beef stock one.

To me, tt was one of the curry flavored snacks.

They're claiming that they worked with Coco Ichi and used their special spices, it could have had some remarkable aspects, for example providing a sachet of spice powder to give more kicks to this rusk.

Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
Happo-sai with Shio Koji
Happo-sai is translated into "Chop Suey."

Koji is "rice malt" and lately salty rice malt called "Shio Koji" is really famous.

No wonder Yamazaki used this ingredient, too.

*Shio means salt in Japanese.

Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
Meat Gyoza (dumpling)
東園 (Toen) in Yokohama China town supervised this dumpling bun.

A real dumpling is set in the middle of the bun, which is popular and sold in convenience stores.

So you can see a real gyoza wrapped inside.

Tastes good but I want to add more soy sauce flavor into the meat.

Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
PIZZA-LA Italian Basil
They collaborated with PIZZA-LA and used the pizza sauce for this.

The sauce is used for Italian Basil, PIZZA-LA's popular pizza.

It's really good!

Cheese was melted when I heated.

It's high calories, 221kcal, but still yummy.

Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
Velvety Demiglace Hamburg
Heated in microwave and it was exactly "a hamburg in a bun."

Unfortunately, the hamburg absorbed the sauce.

Though this package says mellow sauce is inside, I wouldn't say such velvety sauce was inside.

I'd grade this as 5 out of 10.
Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
Juicy Beef Carubi
Carubi is Korean-style beef rib.

It's good when it's hot.

Soft and sweet/salty sauce with tender beef.

3/26/2012

Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
Yoshinoya Beef Bun
Yamazaki produced this collaborating with 吉野家 / Yoshinoya, the popular beef bowl chain.

They used Yoshinoya's well-known sauce to cook the beef till it gets tender.

I microwaved this and it was like a pork bun (but yes, beef inside).
Yamazaki Gourmet Box:
Pork Curry from Curry House CoCo Ichiban-ya/CoCo
This pork curry bun comes with a sachet of spices to add extra spiciness.
The bag of spice could be added so that you can create your own spicy curry instantly.

It would have been better when it's microwaved.
