(Japanse follows. /

Aeon's private label "Topvalu" launched 2 Greek Yogurt flavors on March 24, 2015.
Topvalu has several brands and this yogurts are from "Topvalu Select."
Topvalu Select focuses on ingredients, production area, process of manufacture and function to produce high quality items.

On April 8, Aeon released a press and they said that more than a million pieces were sold since the first launch, and the numbers of sales was about 3 times more than they had originally intended.

They had plain and honey, and the prices were different by about 20 yen, so I chose a cheaper one, plain.
Left side of the lid says, "Condensed and creamy yogurt with 'strained process.'"
On the right side, it says it's non-fat and domestically-produced, and "We call strained yogurt as Greek yogurt."

This is the cup.

The yogurt inside.

It's thick like other Greek yogurt.

It looked like hard peak whipped cream or whipped cream cheese as it stayed when I scooped some.

There's no fruit sauce on the bottom so that it's a little bit heavy to mix it first, but gradually it became smoother.
Though it's smoother than before it's mixed, the yogurt was still thick and didn't fall off from the spoon.
It didn't have much sourness nor sweetness, and it's just plain yogurt.
To add fresh fruits and jam as a sweetener, or even this may be suitable to use as a dip with some spices and vegetables.

Good & Delish Scottish Shortbread Fingers
Good & Delish

(Japanese follows. /

Good & Delish is Duane Reade's store brand and the variety is very wide; cupcakes, crackers, dried fruits, nuts, cookies, ice cream, sauce, chocolate, and more.

Duane Reade is everywhere in NYC and I see the shops or maybe more than CVS or Walgreens.
Duane Reade Inc. is a subsidiary of the Walgreen Company and a chain of pharmacy and convenience stores, primarily located in New York City.

It's known for its high volume small store layouts in densely populated Manhattan locations.

I don't remember since when, but I love shortbread cookies and I found Good & Delish shortbread today.
It's called Scottish Shortbread Fingers.

The box has front design on both sides so that it can be placed for both sideways and longways.

Inside, there's a transparent bag holding 12 shortbread fingers.

It looked just like a regular shortbread finger.
And it tasted just as good as classic one, too.
It was fragile and when I bit, it looked like it consisted of butter crumbs  which are pressed and shaped into a bar, which is same as other shortbread fingers I've had.

I opened this box when I was so starving and I finished the whole bag in about 30 minutes, which I shouldn't have as per piece is 80kcal and half of the calories is from fat.
So I basically I consumed 960kcal...

Poutine Is Everywhere In Montreal And It's Even Available As Potato Chips

(Japanese follows. /

The other day, we stopped by a supermarket in Montreal and found poutine flavored chips.
Needless to say, we had to get it and try.
Poutines we tried are;

The potato chips is called "President's Choice World Of Flavours Poutine Flavour Rippled Potato Chips."
President's Choice is known as "PC" and a private label or store brand owned by Loblaw Companies Limited, which is Canada's largest food retailer.
President's Choice is the company's premium line including grocery, household products, financial service and mobile phones.

I couldn't find exactly when this chips came out, but the oldest review on the HP was from November 17, 2013, so I guess it's launched last fall.

New!
Try it...you'll love it! TM

On the back, it says "Recreating the mouth-watering flavours of classic diner favourite - fries with delicious homestyle brown gravy and cheese curds -  these crunchy ripple chips are a tasty take on an iconic Quebecois taste."

Inside of the bag.
I saw powder covered rippled chips there.

This is a piece of potato chips.
I think this had gravy flavor, and the saltiness was very similar to the poutine.
However, there's no cheese flavor I could tell.
The rippled chips caught flavorful powder well and fully, and it was hard to stop eating --- it doesn't matter if the chips were resembling poutine or not.

Sobeys' Generic Brand "Compliments" Is Cheaper And Tastes OK

(Japanese follows. /

Sobeys is a Canadian company founded in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, in 1907 as a meat delivery and its first supermarket opened in 1949.

Sobeys holds many brands including Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Fresh Co., and others.
Last night, we stopped by at IGA, a supermarket chain, and found Sobeys' generic brand called "Compliments."
And the name of the cracker is JAZZ.
As it's much cheaper than RITZ cracker, we decided to try.
* 1.99 CND dollars.

Inside of the box, there's a big transparent plastic bag holding crackers.

The shape of the crackers were very similar to RITZ crackers.
It didn't have strong cheddar cheese flavor or cheese taste but only saltiness.
I didn't mind having cheddar cheese flavor, which I rarely tasted, but I should have gotten regular (salt) so that I could see if it's as good as RITZ crackers.

To me, RITZ crackers in Canada and U.S. taste different from the one sold in Japan.
(Even the brand name is different; in Japan, it's "Nabisco" but in Canada and U.S., it's Christie.)
Japanese one has more crispiness, lightness and also is flavorful.
I miss Japanese RITZ crackers...

"Premium Roll Cake" From Lawson Has One-Day Only Version On The 22nd Every Month

Lawson is one of Japanese conbini chains and has its private dessert brand called "Uchi Cafe Sweets."
The private brand was launched in September, 2009 to compete with other conbini chains' private dessert brand and the main focus of the Uchi Cafe Sweets is to fulfill consumers with delicate and high quality sweets which have been sold at convenience stores for reasonable price. And the concept is to let consumers enjoy the sweets at home and in the office as if you can make anywhere like a relaxing cafe.

I've written 3 titles about the PB sweets.

The Premium Roll Cake is the very popular one among the sweets they have made.
The roll cake first came out on September 29, 2009, and in 6 months, the sales reached 18,000,000 pcs.
And in 2010, Monde Selection chose this roll cake for the gold medal, which was the first conbini chilled dessert in the history.

*They've created seasonal flavors and limited flavors besides the original that has whipped cream in the center.

Recently I learned that on the 22nd of each month, they sell a special Premium Roll Cake in a special package.
Why is it only on the 22nd? Good question.
Please see a calender of this month below and check what exactly above the 22 is.
It's always the 15. ---> Subtracting 7 from 22, it should be 15.
In Japanese, one of the way to pronounce each number is "Ichi (1)" and "Go (5)."
And "Ichigo" means strawberry in Japanese.
Thus, every but only 22nd each month, Lawson puts a half piece of strawberry over the whipped cream in the roll cake and sell it for the same price.

I went to Lawson nearby and looked for the sweets section.
An advertising plate was inserted to announce it's a special version.
The plate has a little calender to explain the characteristic feature of this roll cake.
And it says that the price is the same even though they put a half strawberry.

I can clearly see there're strawberries in each package and see also the name of the product is special "with strawberry" and "without any extra charge."

Time to eat and see the product.
The package of the plastic spoon has "Uchi Cafe" on it.

As you can see, the package of the roll cake has a little calender on the left to show why it's only 22nd when it's got a strawberry topping.
Actual name of this Roll Cake is 「スプーンで食べる プレミアムロールケーキ」  but underneath, there's an additional info in parenthesis (いちごのせ).
スプーンで食べる means eat with a spoon, and プレミアムロールケーキ is Premium Roll Cake.
いちごのせ means strawberry is on (the roll cake).

This is an actual product.
Premium Roll Cake is a sliced roll cake and the sponge cake acts as a wall to hold the soft and light whipped cream. --- this is why the package says "eat with a spoon."

First bite.
The sponge cake was moist, soft, and sweet.
The whipped cream was also sweet but not too sugary and it's very light.

The strawberry was bigger than I thought and the thickness of the cut strawberry was about 2/3 of that of the whipped cream.

After eating half of the roll cake, I finally ate this strawberry.
Mmm, it's fresh and good.

Oven-Fresh Chocolat Pudding from Circle K Sunkus /

I wrote about original flavor of Kamadashi Purin the other day, and today, I tried the new version "Chocolat Purin," a chocolate pudding.
Circle K Sunkus' private brand called "Cherie Dolce" launched this chocolate pudding on February 4, 2013.
As I mentioned, I had hard time finding this and the original pudding while this new chocolate pudding was on sale for a short time.

On the top, it says, "This pudding uses Belgian bitter chocolate as the cacao flavor stands out well. ~50% of the chocolate in this pudding is from Belgium~"

I can see it's quite dark and it doesn't have caramel sauce at the bottom.
So even though it says chocolate pudding, same as other chocolate pudding, it doesn't contain caramel sauce.
<Ingredients>
After dairy products, it's chocolate and in the parenthesis, it again mentions that half of the amount is Belgian chocolate, followed by egg yolk, sugar, and a type of chocolate called (Jun chocolate), which I have no idea how to say in English, but the description is the following.
準チョコレート is a type of chocolate which needs to contain more than 15% of cocoa, more than 3% of cocoa butter, more than 18% of fat, and less than 3% of water.
Pure chocolate (純チョコレート) has much higher percentage of cocoa (at least 35% of cocoa, more than 18% of cocoa butter. Also it shouldn't contain any fat from other than cocoa butter.
<Nutrition>
Calories: 296kcal --- original was 180kcal
Protein: 3.6g --- original was 3.5g
Fat: 23.0g --- original was 10.7g
Carbohydrate: 19.6g --- original was 17.6g
Natrium: 50.3mg --- original was 75.2mg

As you can see, compared with original flavor, this is about 100kcal higher and fat is more than double.
I guess it's from chocolate...
Same as the original package, it has a paper-textured wrapping underneath the plastic cover.
It has some water as I kept taking photos, but also the surface looks a little bit dried and solid.

The original one was smooth and soft, so I expected this "Chocolat Purin" would be the same.
However, the texture was so different.
Not resembles at all.

When I put a spoon in the cup, it felt harder than the regular pudding to stick in.
And the inside had heavy, sticky, dense, and clinging texture.
I'd put it ねっとり and べったり in Japanese.

I was wondering why this package didn't have the caution, "Be careful as the content may spill," which was on the original pudding.

I could hold this pudding on the spoon without having trouble.
I like the original pudding texture better and could see the name and the actual content match, but this chocolate pudding was more like, "First it's marshmallow-ish but it melts away gradually leaving deep chocolate flavor on your tongue."
Thus, it makes sense to me that they didn't use "melting" term for this version.

It's 180 JPY and cheap.
Personally, if I get this on a plate in a restaurant, I'd think this could be maybe 500 JPY value.
As it's gotta dense flavor and heavy texture, just one cup can make you satisfied.

Oven-Fresh Melting Pudding from Circle K Sunkus/

Circle K Sunkus Co., Ltd. is a convenience store chain.
It used to be Circle K (under the control of UNY Co., Ltd.) and Sunkus (under Nagasakiya Co., Ltd.) but they merged in 2001

This Kamadashi Torokeru Purin (literal translation is "oven-fresh melting pudding") is one of the long-selling products produced by "Cherie Dolce" is a private brand of Circle K founded in November, 2007.
This pudding has sold more than 350,000 pcs total.

I've never thought of getting a good quality sweets in Circle K Sunkus as most of the time I go to Lawson to find its private brand's sweets.

As they're having discount sale on chocolate pudding, it was hard to find this original pudding also. I went to a same shop 2 days in a row but no luck, but found both original and chocolate version in a different branch.

This is the original pudding.
On the top, it says, "Prepared with low heat carefully. This is a melting and smooth textured pudding."

<Ingredients>
Eggs, sugar, caramel sauce, vanilla beans, etc.
As long as I saw, I didn't see gelatin so I could tell that it wouldn't have flabby texture like some other puddings I've tried.
Besides, as it says it's "baked," they wouldn't need to use gelatin to make this pudding still.
<Nutrition>
Calories: 180kcal
Protein: 3.5g
Fat: 10.7g
Carbohydrates: 17.6g
Natrium: 75.2mg
There're little notes that black dots in the pudding are vanilla beans, and be careful about the content's spilth.

From side.
Pudding looks a little bit pale and has dark caramel sauce at the bottom.
Opening the package, I thought it was interesting that this has a plastic cover on the top and underneath, there's a paper-ish cover, which is about 1.5cm (half inch) above the pudding.
There're vanilla beans (the black dots), as directed on the label.

To stick in a spoon felt weird.
The surface was bouncy but once the spoon broke the hard skin, it started sinking easily without having trouble getting to the bottom.
The inside was really smooth and it melted on my tongue.
As it's so soft and smooth, it was difficult to hold this on the spoon as it quickly fell off from it.
The notice could be written bigger than it is since the caution wasn't exaggerating.
I think it's a good size and 120 JPY is reasonable price.

Debu Pan #2: Chocolate Chip Cookies in Bread

Ok, here's the Debu Pan series' 2nd bread.
This I added chocolate chip cookies.
I was going to put Country Ma'am (produced by Fujiya) but the supermarket near my place didn't have it but instead, they had private brand called "Topvalu" copycat cookies, of course cheaper.

This time, I put chocolate chip cookies. A supermarket I went to didn't have Country Ma'am, so I used a copy one from Topvalu.

<Ingredients>
Bread wheat (strong flour) 180g
All purpose flour 30g
1 small beaten egg
Milk 140ml
Yeast 3g
Margarine 20g
Chocolate chip cookies 10.5g x 12pcs = 126g
*Add broken cookies after the beep (or when the machine is almost done with making dough).

First, I put all the ingredients except cookies.
This is the key, otherwise cookies will be finely crushed and you might not be able to enjoy the chocolate chips!

I used Topvalu chocolate chip cookies.
This tasted similar to Country Ma'am from Fujiya.

2 kinds are in the big package.

Putting broken cocoa cookie now.

About to throw vanilla cookie into a home bakery.

Dough + crushed cookies.

Cocoa: 6 pcs
Vanilla: 6 pcs
Total: 12 pcs (126g) into the bread machine.

Finally all the chocolate chip cookies are in the bread machine with other ingredients.

Turned out better than Caramel Corn one :)

It was so good. Chocolate chips were still there and inside was soft.
Bake fresh one tasted good but when I toasted, it was also super tasty!

Again, this is Debu Pan even though it's homemade.
To make Debu Pan, I keep adding extra calories to the regular bread but I know tasty foods tend to have higher calories than "healthy" dishes.
