Hickory Burger From The Apple Pan

(Japanese follows.  /

While we're in LA area, we went to The Apple Pan, one of Los Angeles’ oldest continuing operating restaurants.
It's locally famous for its hamburgers and apple pies served with vanilla ice cream since 1947.
Bob and Ellen Baker, the founders, bought the space in 1940, but it took Bob to construct the shop till 1946 due to the WWII.

Their popular burgers, which they say "sandwiches" on the menu, are Steak Burger and Hickory Burger.
Steak Burger which comes with a signature relish was invented by Bob in 1927 at his other restaurant, but the building was burnt down in the early 1930s.
In 1945, Hickory Burger was created and it's served with a special hickory sauce.

Other burgers from U.S. I've reviewed are the following.
Shadey Glen
Burger Joint
McDonald's Grilled Onion Cheddar Burger
4food Burger
Wendy's Spicy Chipotle Jr. Cheeseburger
Cheeseburger From IN-N-OUT
ShackBurger From Shake Shack
Louis' Lunch

Cheeseburger And Other Items From IN-N-OUT

We're very lucky to find a last parking spot when we arrived.

Another sign in the parking lot: "The Apple Pan - Quality Forever"
While I was taking this photo, one of the employees said, "No photo!" and I was surprised, but he said it's a joke. (phew)

There's a little path connected to the front from the parking lot, and there're colorful flowers with greens.

Inside of the restaurant, there's only on large U-shaped counter table surrounding the grilling space.

The big silver containers are refrigerator with meat patties and sliced cheese, and a guy who took orders grabbed some patties and threw them on the grill which is behind the bricks.
So all the burgers were made to order.

This is where pies were rested.

The cash register was very old and classic.
There's a memo of the price of kinds and numbers so that it's easy to calculate.

Menu

On the back, there's a list of pies.

I'm not a big fan of relish so I got a Hickory Burger while my husband got a Steak Burger.
Both contains mayonnaise, so I ordered mine without mayo.
The waiter didn't say anything, so I wasn't sure if he head me asking no mayo. (I wish he had said something, just like "ok," one word.)
When I mentioned the kind of burger I wanted, he asked me immediately, "With cheese?"
I was gonna add cheese so it's not a problem, but if you don't want cheese, you'd better say "NO CHEESE" quickly.
* Cheese (Tillamook cheddar) is an option, so if you added, it's 50 cents more.

Soda
Each of us got Diet Coke, and this is another thing that is famous; a metallic holder.
Inside of the holder, there's a paper cone with ice.

Fries
Soon, the waiter came back again and asked, "Fries?" so we asked one fries.
It's on a paper plate, which is also a well-known way to serve fries here.
When the waiter brought fries, he poured ketchup on another paper plate.
Fries were hot and lightly salted, and they're thicker than McDonald's fries.

It's like the "'murica" picture.

Hickory Burger
It's wrapped in a pepper tightly and the way they wrapped Steak Burger was same.

It's about 7cm (2.7 inch) tall, so I squeezed the burger a little before I bit.
I was relieved not to see any mayonnaise inside.
There're lettuce and pickles that were adding crunchiness and freshness.
The Hickory sauce tasted like sweet BBQ sauce but had strong tomato taste, and it's as red as ketchup.
Cheddar cheese helped all the different textured and flavored ingredients bond together well.

Chocolate Pie
They're famous for pies, so we asked what they had that day.
The waiter said apple pie, banana pie, pumpkin pie and chocolate pie, and the last pie wasn't on the menu so we decided to get a chocolate pie to share.

It's a large and tall pie full of chocolate cream and whipped cream.

The chocolate cream was rich and thick, but the whipped cream on the top was light and not that sweet.
The crust was crispy like cookies and butter flavored.

I wasn't impressed by the behavior of the waiter in the counter because he talked to some customers with smiles but not to others as if he didn't really care they're eating there besides he used minimum words to take orders.
However, the burger was great.
