World's Second Best Oven-Fresh Melon Pan Ice
世界で2番めにおいしい焼きたてメロンパンアイス

I went to a new Aeon in Tonami, Toyama, and in the food court, there's a melon pan ice cream sandwich shop called "World's Second Best Oven-Fresh Melon Pan Ice."
Melon Pan is a Japanese sweet bread with biscuit dough on the top with checkered patterns, and not necessarily contains melon juice, only the appearance is melon.
Ice is an abbreviation of ice cream in Japanese.
The business started as a melon pan truck, tailgate sell, and when a high school girl bought a melon pan and put some ice cream, it's very delicious and it started a boom.
This is how they got a hint and developed melon pan ice cream.
The reason why it's called "world's second best" is that the best melon pan is made by the master whom the producer learned, thus, his (hers) is the second best.
The original shop is in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, and I heard there're usually lines and they sell 200 pieces on the weekdays and 500 pieces on the weekends on average.
Today, it's lunch break so that I didn't see a long line but depending on the time, I saw long lines.
This is the famous "Melon Pan Ice" and it needs to be consumed right after you receive it because the ice cream will melt.
They also have melon pan for to-go; 1 for 180 yen and 5 for 900 yen.
The rusk looked interesting, so I bought a bag, too.
A staff started preparing the melon pan ice for me, and he grabbed a melon pan from a baking sheet and sliced it halfway.
He said they always use oven-fresh and warm melon pan, and they slice the bread and put ice cream to order.
He even stopped his hands so that I could take a photo.
With a shallow large spoon, he put 3-4 scoops of ice cream.
World's Second Best Oven-Fresh Melon Pan Ice was in my hand after topped with a piece of melon pan rusk.

The melon pan was warm and had very buttery and sweet flavor.
The rusk was crunchier than I had imagined.
The melon pan was crispy on the top and the inside was surprisingly light and fluffy.
Unlike other melon pan, the surface had deeper grids and wasn't covered in crunchy and rough white sugar.
Though it's not coated with sugar, the biscuit was sweet and fragrant already, and the milk ice cream was lightly sweetened and simple so that the balance of the sweetness was perfect.
While eating, the ice cream started melting so that I let the melon pan absorb the melted ice cream in the paper wrap.
The paper wrap had the name of the shop.
The number of people who get the clothes dirty because they're crazy about this melon pan sandwich is sharply rising!
As long as you eat the melon pan ice in this paper wrap, there's a least possibility to have stains on your clothes.
Despite it's a thin paper with some water resistant coating, it's better to eat it as quick as possible.

富山県砺波市にある新しいイオンのフードコートにメロンパン アイスクリーム サンド
イッチを販売しているお店「世界で2番めにおいしい焼きたてメロンパンアイス」がある。
元々はメロンパンの移動販売をしていたらしく、女子高生がメロンパンを買ってアイス
クリームを挟んで食べるととても美味しく、女子高生の間で大ブームとなり、メロンパン
アイスが開発されたとのこと。
店名の「世界で2番め」という理由は、メロンパンの焼き方を教えてくれた師匠のメロン
パンが1番美味しく、自分のは2番めということらしい。
最初の店舗は石川県金沢市にあり、いつも行列が出来ていて、平均で平日200個、週末は
500個も売れるとのこと。
今回お店に行ったのはお昼ご飯時だったので行列はできてはいなかったけれど、時間帯に
よっては長い列を見た。
有名な「メロンパンアイス」は持ち帰り不可で、アイスが溶けるので受け取ってすぐに
食べないといけない。
持ち帰り用のメロンパンは1個180円、5個で900円で販売されていた。
メロンパンラスクがあり、気になったので1袋買ってみた。
スタッフが天板に乗っていたメロンパンを取り、メロンパンに切り込みを入れた。
いつも焼きたての温かいメロンパンを使用し、注文を受けてからスライスしてアイスを
入れると言っていた。
私が写真を撮れるようにと、途中で手を止めてくれた。
浅いスプーンでアイスクリームを3〜4スクープ入れていた。
世界で2番めに美味しい焼きたてメロンパンアイスには、メロンパンラスクが刺さって
いた。
メロンパンは温かく、濃厚なバターと甘い香りがした。
メロンパンラスクは思っていたよりも硬めだった。
メロンパンの上部はサクッとし、内側は驚くほど軽くふんわりとしていた。
他のメロンパンと異なり、ビスケットの格子模様の溝は深く、ザラザラした砂糖で
覆われていなかった。
砂糖がかかっていなかったものの、ビスケットは甘く香りが良いので、甘さが控えめで
シンプルなミルクアイスと良く合っていて、甘さが丁度良かった。
食べている途中でアイスが溶け出したので、包み紙の底に溜まったものをメロンパンに
吸わせて食べた。
包み紙には店名と「夢中になりすぎてお洋服を汚す方急増中！」と書かれていた。
包み紙に入れたまま食べれば洋服を汚す可能性はかなり低いと思うけれど、防水加工が
してあるものの薄い紙なので、なるべく素早く食べるのが良いと思う。
