Black Thunder Box Cake / ブラックサンダー BOXケーキ

Black Thunder is a popular and really cheap chocolate snack sold in conbini.
Sometimes it's set on one of the racks, but sometimes you can find them in a box by the cashier or both.
Black Thunder is produced by Yuraku Confectionery, HQ is located in Kodaira-city, Tokyo.
It has several variations but the most famous one should be original bar, mix of black cocoa cookies with milk chocolate.

The package says the following.
ブラックサンダー 黒い雷神
若い女性に大ヒット中!
おいしさイナズマ級!

It literally means from the top;
Black Thunder  Black Thunder God
Massive hit among young women!
Tastiness is like Inazuma (lightning)!

Basically, they put "thunder" a lot on package as you can see also.
I'm not sure if this snack is more famous in females than males and also I'm not quite sure what they wanted to say through "tastiness is like lightning!" yet I think it implies something shockingly yummy?

Calories per pouch is 115 kcal and the content (a chocolate bar) is 22gm.

Anyways, now you can kind of picture the package has lightening image with gold on both sides and in the middle to coincide with the name.

Last weekend, I found Black Thunder Box Cake in a conbini.
It's been such a long time since last time I had Black Thunder and when I saw this package, I had to get it. (Lucky I bought as I couldn't find this near my house.)

On the cover, it has a label with same line on the left side (I couldn't catch with my camera).
The black and white dots cookies are the Black Thunder.

Calories of this entire cake is 303 kcal.
It's about 3 times more than the chocolate bar but the amount of the cake in it, it's not that bad.
And also it was 260 JPY, which is 8 times more expensive than the popular Black Thunder.

Uncover the lid, and I saw some broken but big chunks of Black Thunder on the top.
Underneath Black Thunder chunks, there're smooth chocolate mousse, cocoa powder, and dark chocolate lines.
Looks fancy. I can't picture the cheap snack in this.

It's not only a chocolate mousse dessert, but it has layers.
From the bottom, chocolate sponge cake, chocolate pudding (not confident to say but it was flabby like jelly), and chocolate mousse.
Yes, everything was chocolate. What a wonderful dessert!

The sponge cake was really soft and not mushy at all since it's under chocolate pudding.
The pudding made it a little bit difficult to pick up the whole layer as the pudding let the sponge cake slide off. It's tasted close to cocoa with extra milk.
The mousse was really fine and smooth.

Overall, this cake didn't let me have the feeling I'm eating Black Thunder since this cake has delicate and chic aspect in the meantime Black Thunder itself has such a reasonable and can be eaten while you walk, like Snickers.

I recommend you get both this and the regular Black Thunder to see what it is originally.

Orchid Room in Hotel Okura Tokyo /
ホテルオークラ オーキッドルーム

Having been searching some sweets before, I finally got a chance to go to Orchid Room in Hotel Okura Tokyo.

Hotel Okura Tokyo is located in Toranomon, Minato-ward.
Closest station is Kamiyacho or Toranomon and about 5 minutes walk according to the webpage, but actually it was about 10 minutes as there're slight slope to get to the main building where the Orchid Room is.

This year, 2012 is its 50th anniversary of the opening of Hotel Okura Tokyo and they serve Pannekoeken (Dutch pancake: thin and sticky) at Orchid Room as a special menu during breakfast and tea time.
Pannekoeken was used to be available at breakfast for the guests only, but to celebrate the anniversary, it's on the menu for the visitors, too.

When we got to Orchid Room, a tidily dressed waiter guided to a table.
And we're handed out menu respectively.
Center of the table, there's a little vase with real orchid.
I chose French toast as booked and was thinking whether I should get Pannekoeken.
While thinking what to do, he ordered afternoon tea.
I asked the waiter how long Pannekoeken would be on the menu and he said at least it should be available till end of the year.
I still couldn't decide but then he said I should just get it, so I asked the waiter to change the amount of French toast; instead of 2pcs, I asked 1pc for me.
And yes, I ordered Pannekoeken.

They brought tea first.
He chose Yorkshire Gold and I got China Rose Petal.
Pots were covered with a soft and thick cover with orchid stitchwork for 5 minutes or so before pouring the tea.

My China Rose Petal had less brown color to compare with Yorkshire Gold, and it had really relaxing rose flavor.
When I looked at their tea page on website, it said rose petals were used to add fragrance to Orange Pekoe.

French toast:
Regularly, it's 2pcs but they happily make 1pc French toast upon request, served with maple syrup and butter.
It looked like rolled egg and really thick but soft.
Outside was really crispy but not burned at all with mouthwatering butter flavor.
However, the inside was so soft and moist that it was hard to pick up a giant piece.

The reason it needs to be booked is because of the way they prepare it.
The bread is prepared overnight and once the order is set, they put in a low heated oven for 7-8 minutes till it gets golden.
That's the key to make this French toast so soft, moist, and have elastic texture otherwise the French toast shrinks.

Pannekoeken:
As the waiter said, it was thinner and sticker than regular pancakes served with fruits (Asian pear, melon, blueberry, raspberry, banana, kiwi, and papaya.
Also, maple whipped cream was brought.
I took a bite of maple whipped cream, which I'd never heard or tried, and it was quite just by itself.
It had smooth texture like cream but had deep maple flavor into it.
The pancake looked thicker version of crape.
Edge was crispy and it kept as it was till the last bite I had.

Afternoon tea:
Cakes (strawberry shortcake and eclair), scones (plain and raisin), and sandwiches set in high tea stand of 3 plates.
They kindly substituted beef for ham in sandwich when we only asked, "We don't eat pork."
We thought it was really generous of them to do our favor in such a short time. (We asked at the table when the waiter took our order.)
I liked scones a lot. Little scones were crispy and light, but had rich butter flavor and went well with butter, strawberry jam, and clotted cream.
I'm glad to have both French toast and Pannekoeken with some bites of scones and cakes.
Each plate was rich and flavorful and I was so satisfied.
It was inexpensive but definitely a great experience, especially this tea time was a surprise from him :)

KFC Umashio Shoga Chicken Chips /
ポテトチップス x KFC 旨塩生姜チキン
Calbee Inc. collaborated with KFC and created chips with the flavor of KFC's newest menu.
KFC's newest flavor is Umashio Shoga, which literally means "tasty salt with ginger" flavor.
Lately ginger is really popular as it warms your body since it helps blood circulation promotion.

Calbee is a major Japanese snack maker established in 1949 in Hiroshima pref.
The company name, Calbee is a coined term from calcium and vitamin B1, which were both scarce around that time.
*The way we pronounce vitamin is "bitamin" so I think that's one of the reason they used B instead of V.

I knew that Calbee and KFC would launch a limited product this fall and was a little bit aware of this chips.
However, I haven't tried the ginger chicken yet, so I wouldn't be fully compare or mention the flavor of the chips.
When I found this chips at a conbini, I was holding back to buy yet as it says, "limited" I bought it.

On the back side, there're a lot of info about this chips besides the ingredient list.
On the left top, there's an explanation of this product.
Calbee x KFC Umashio Shouga Chicken Flavor
This potato chips represents the limited time flavor fried chicken sold at KFC.

"Umashio Shouga Chicken" has an innovative characteristic. The batter is much lighter than ever, salt and ginger compliment the umami of the chicken.
Savory black sesames and hot peppers give accent to it.

So far, it sounds tasty.

And this is something I've never seen before on the package with such a big coupon.
Just below the description of the KFC's limited flavor, there're these 2 trial coupons to buy actual chicken at KFC.
Woooooo, I should keep them :)

Each coupon has different period of use.
I thought it's pretty clever so that they can expect that customers may come back several times.

On the right top, there's a factory number and also ingredients list.
They always mention, "Potatoes (No GM)" followed by vegetable oil and sugar.

And lately I see little notes on the packages mentioning that the product has been made in a same factory or machine which handles xxxx and xxxx.
This chips were made in an institution where uses eggs, shrimps, and crabs.
No wonder they use shrimps since Calbee became famous for Kappa Ebisen, which contains a lot of shrimps.
*Ebi means shrimps.

Calories are not that bad and about the same as other ones.

Inside of the bag.
First it looked like really peppery and strong ginger and some animal flavor came out, but it was definitely not chicken (at least I thought so)!

I grabbed a chip to try.
First I thought these black spots could be both black pepper and sesame, but I didn't sense the  flavor or taste but black pepper.

I thought it was supposed to have KFC's yummy chicken flavor, but I just couldn't think of chicken when I was eating them.
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, but somehow I kept eating and eating.
Seems like it has something to make me continue to eat. --- That's what junk foods are.

So... maybe the real chicken is much better and worth trying?
And if I use coupon, maybe I won't be upset much...

Baker Bounce in Tokyo Midtown /
ベーカーバウンス 東京ミッドタウン店

Tokyo Midtown is located in Roppongi and it opened March 30, 2007.
It consists of shopping centers, restaurants, office building, hotel, art museum, hall, medical center, parking lot, and parks.

I've been to a couple of restaurants and eat-ins in food court area, but I hadn't gotten a chance to try an American diner, Baker Bounce on B1 floor.

The other night I visited for the first time and they had a lot of selection of foods and drinks.
Some dishes I wanted to try would take a long time, so I ordered some quick ones and today I went back there again for late lunch.

When we got there, it was already close to 2PM but there're 2 groups were waiting before us.
We waited for about 15 minutes before seating.

While waiting outside, we're looking at menu but it wasn't a complete one and only has 2 pages, however, when you sit and are provided menu, there're about 5 pages of plates and 2-3 pages of drinks.

We ordered chicken fingers and chilly cheese fries with sloppy joe.
Chilly cheese fries with sloppy joe came faster than we thought and chicken fingers came right after.

Chilly cheese fries with sloppy joe (682 JPY)
Wedge cut potatoes covered with chili sauce, cheese, and chopped fresh onions.
Sloppy joe was quite sweet but fresh onion was a little bit spicy.
Personally I wish the chili was less sweet.
Chopped onions were crunchy so it added different texture to soft potatoes and liquid chili.

Chicken fingers (420 JPY)
Chicken fingers were lightly fried and incredibly crispy.
It's served with a wedge of lemon and tartar sauce, which I don't touch ever.
It came with 4 pieces and each piece was pretty large.

We ordered Chicken tender topped with crispy grilled bacon and cheese with black chili (1,155 JPY) and it took them for about 20 minutes to prepare.
I asked them not to put bacon, and they certainly took care of my need.
The chicken breast was bigger than iPhone 4 and the height was about 5 cm (2 inch.), yes, it was humongous.
On a plate, there're grilled vegetables (eggplants, cucumbers, and red paprika) and potatoes marinated with yellow mustard.

The chicken breast had skin so I removed, but the spicy black chili was with cheese (cheddar or American) over the skin, so I put back the sauce and cheese when I took out all the skin.

The chicken was well cooked but not dried, it was soft and moist inside.
The black chili had miso (fermented soybean paste) flavor as it was salty and had yeasty flavor when I had a bite.
I had no idea what they put in the black chili sauce, but maybe miso, black pepper, garlic, and ginger maybe...
I really liked it and the sauce went well with rice; you can choose rice or bread when they take order.

Ruben (1,050 JPY)

It came a little bit after the chicken tender was served and it had a small bowl of coleslaw and  fried potatoes.
And regular Ruben would contain relish but this place put shredded cabbage with mayonnaise.
So, basically I didn't have any single bite of it but I had some bread.
The bread was made with rye wheat and toasted with butter or margarine.
It was really light and crispy. I would have kept eating this toasted bread.

Some of the beverages had a sign for refill.
But it's not like "if you pay extra 52 JPY, you'll get free refill" but basically "you can get refill for 52 JPY."

It was pretty busy even though it was not lunch time.
However, waiters were paying attention to customers and whatever we asked about the food, they explained really well.

I'd love to go back some other time and try other dishes.

Pudding d'or in Isetan Shinjuku / プリン・ド・オール 新宿伊勢丹

Pudding d'or is a pudding shoppe located in Isetan Honkan's B2 floor.
*Honkan means main.
According to an insert came with a pudding, it says, "It selects and sells only puddings from pudding specialty shops, restaurants, and sweets shops from every region of the country. Approximately 20 kinds of puddings are available and they're categorized into more than 10 kinds (custard, milk, fruit, chocolat, surprises, etc.). Every week, they change the lineups in each category."

Isetan had a special dessert week for Halloween for about a week and it'll end today, October 31, 2012.
And I got this pumpkin pudding about a week before Halloween as a gift.
Jack O'lantern was printed on the orange china up.
A plastic lid was stuck with tapes so this shot looks a little bit awkward, but actual cup was really adorable.

Over the top, there's a tape shows the maker's name.
I searched for "Kitchen ena Handmade P" and the result came up was "Handmade Pudding Kitchen ena" and it's a pudding shoppe in Miyazaki pref.

Label on the back shows the address besides the full name of this pudding and ingredients.
Halloween Pumpkin Pudding
Generic name: fresh western confectionery
Ingredients: milk, pumpkin paste, pumpkin, fresh cream, egg, sugar, and rum.
Unlike Pucchin Purin http://chobiro47.blogspot.jp/2012/10/pucchin-purin-choco-mix.html , no gelatin or Japanese agar was used.
Obviously it was easy to imagine that this pumpkin pudding wouldn't have weird flabby-but-solid texture.

Surface of the pudding.
It looked like unbaked cheesecake, which we call rare cheesecake.
It had really good pumpkin flavor even before I dug in.

You can tell the pudding is really velvety.
I think they pureed and strained the real pumpkin to let it be silky but flavorful.

At the bottom, there's some liquid caramel sauce.
Those pumpkin pudding sold in supermarket or conbini, it tends to have a lot thicker and more caramel sauce.
But this contained sophisticated amount and had a hint of rum.

Since no coagulant was added, this pumpkin pudding was smooth, sleeky, and soft.
Without artificial pumpkin flavor, it had a real pumpkin taste and fragrance. No wonder 2nd and 3rd most used ingredients are pumpkin paste and pumpkin.

I washed this pumpkin cup and thought of using to keep little things or a plant, but haven't used it yet and it's sitting with other plates and cups.

Another remarkable story is that when you go to department stores and buy these fresh cakes and confectioneries, the cashier always ask how long I'd carry it around before you put it in fridge and depending on the hours, they put blue ice for you.
And it's nicely packed with urethane package to keep it cold and from breaking.

Pucchin Purin Choco Mix / プッチンプリン チョコミックス

Pucchin Purin is one of the famous pudding produced by Glico, a sweet maker in Japan.
This pudding first came out to market back in 1972.
Now they're celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, 2012.
Pucchin is an onomatopoeia of breaking a little tip on the bottom of the case. (I will explain with photos later.)
Purin is a Japanese way to say pudding.
Choco is a short term of chocolate.

1970s, there're a lot of diary products, for example yogurt,  but there's almost no dessert in supermarkets or grocery shops.
At the same time, pudding was really popular and big in sweet stores and confectionery shops, so employees got a hint from the boom and started thinking it would be great if everyone could eat pudding at home as a regular snack.
If you go to Glico homepage, you could see some manga (but only in Japanese) how they had struggled, researched over and over, and finally could bring the pudding into the world.
http://pucchin.jp/top.html
Once you click the link above, a giant pudding would be shown and once the movie is done, on the bottom left, there's a pudding saying おしえて!プッチン with smaller font of English line TELL ME PUCCHIN! which would show the manga of history how they made Pucchin Purin.

What makes this pudding interesting and unique is the plastic cup.
Once you pinch a little tab on the bottom, this pudding would fall out easily with perfect shape.
Their focus was "sweet shop's dessert at home" so that they wanted to make the pudding look like the one served at those special eating places.
They place pudding upside down and decorate with whipped cream and fruits.

So, to celebrate 40th anniversary of Pucchin Purin, they launched a Pucchin Purin Choco Mix.
Regular Pucchin Purin has 2 colors; yellow and brown, which are egg and caramel.
However, this Choco Mix has another layer with the 2 colors, so it's actually a triple colored pudding.

It says "limited edition" and 20th anniversary.
The wavy shape of 40's "0" is same shape of the cup.
In the star-looking shape, there's プ, which is pronounced "pu," is a first letter of プリン /  pudding.
An image of the pudding on the lid is upside down, so when you open the cover, you'll see chocolate layer.
Looks like a jellied hot cocoa.

So, once you open the top, you need to prepare a plate and cover like this.

Ok, now it needs to be turned upside down.
I'm not crazy, this is how we gotta do.

Please see the direction on the bottom:
1. Please place the pudding upside down on a plate.
2. Push the tab towards the way an arrow shows.

Once you push the little tip, air goes into from the hole and pudding falls out quickly.

See? Now the pudding is separated from the case!
And the order of colors are same as the package image (except the shape and height).
Many Japanese puddings use gelatin to make the pudding firm and stable and Pucchin Pudding is also one of those, though the pudding is no longer in the case, it keeps the shape and won't collapse.

Funny aspect appears when you shake the plate sideways.
This pudding looks like dancing.

As you can see, the caramel is really smooth and falls down from the top once you dig in.

Nutrition: 1 cup (170g)
234 kcal
3.4g of protein
13.2g of fat
25.3g of carbohydrate
123mg of natrium

Ingredients, there're gelatin and agar (Japanese agar), this is the reason why this pudding has jello-like texture.

As I grew up in Japan, I'm used to this a bit hard pudding but there're a lot of types of pudding, like strawberry sauce, chocolate, really smooth and custard type of pudding, and also this hard type.

Like I mentioned, it sounds weird to have strawberry sauce pudding but many companies or brands create seasonal flavor puddings every year thus we get to try pumpkin pudding during Halloween season. (I haven't written this pudding yet.)

Pucchin Purin can be eaten directly from the cup of course, but I enjoy seeing the pudding falling off from the cup, landing on a plate, shaking and dancing before eating it.

Zuien Bekkan Shinjuku / 隨園別館 新宿店

I wanted to try some Chinese food and had a chance to go there day after Halloween night out.

This place is called Zuien Bekkan (Shinjuku branch), and there're 2 other branches in Tachikawa, Shin-Marunouchi blgd., and Odawara.

I've learned this place offers super cheap lunch set and actually an authentic Chinese plates.
One of the menu is "one coin lunch," which we call for 500 JPY lunch as we have 500 yen coin.
And the set includes half-sized sour noodle (酸辣湯 / San ra-tan /  Hot and sour soup), half-sized fried rice, and almond jelly (杏仁豆腐 / An'nin-dofu).
Some other lunch sets are 750 ~ 1,500 JPY.

To see if they have tasty Chinese foods, I really wanted to give a shot at one coin lunch.
However, as we went there on Sunday, there's no menu hanging inside or outside :(

So we actually looked through a whole menu and found some plates we'd try.

We ordered the following.
合菜戴帽 (stir-fried vegetable and pork covered with fried egg) --- I have no idea how to put the pronunciation with alphabet but with Japanese character Katakana showed like this; ホーツァーダイマウ for reference.

牛肉の辛味タンメン (spicy Chinese noodles served with vegetable and beef)

蟹炒飯 (fried rice with crab meat)

And a bottle of coke.

We first ordered one plate each; egg and noodle (合菜戴帽 and 牛肉の辛味タンメン) but I kept looking at the menu and a manager came close to me.

From the first, fried rice with crab meat got my attention really bad yet I didn't wanna order a full size since I thought the dishes we ordered would fill us up.
I asked him if there's a half size fried rice and his answer was, "We can prepare half size when we're not that busy. And as we're not busy, we can make you one."
AWESOME!

As soon as he took the extra and special order from me, he screamed at kitchen in Chinese,  "aoijqp984yt aegj!! jawpe8u iathufaoua@ty  CHA-HAN!!!"
*Cha-han is the way Japanese people call fried rice and Chinese sounded pretty close.
So I hoped he asked cooks to make smaller fried rice for me.

First, a bottle of coke came and my egg was served right after.
合菜戴帽
Egg on the right side looks like annual ring of wood and I was really amazed by the way they cooked this.
I still haven't figured out how they made the egg but am guessing they kept moving the pan in a circular motion while pouring beaten egg with ladle.

This egg dish (underneath the egg, there're stir fried mixed vegetables) came with fine strips of leek / naganegi onion, sweet miso (fermented soybean paste), and wraps (strong wheat based wrap).

Inside of the egg.
Sliced pork, bean sprout, cabbage, greens (leaves or spinach), and bean-starch vermicelli were inside.
The seasoning was soy sauce based and a little bit salty.
First I tried this without adding any miso paste or onion, and it was quite tasty.

This is a photo on the menu.
Clockwise from the left top, egg, miso paste, wrap, and onion.

This menu is the number 82, and in Japanese, it says that the wrap is not included.
When I ordered this dish, they didn't ask me if I wanted the wrap or not, so I thought they wouldn't serve me without asking.
However, they brought me all of it anyway, so I tried another bite with this wrap.

The texture of the wrap was strong like mochi (sticky rice) or udon (a type of noodle).
And the wrap of this was exact the same as that of Peking duck.
Miso paste was sweet and thick, onion was fresh.

As I had to chew a lot the wrap, I became full besides the miso paste was really strong and fulfilling flavored.

To be honest, I prefer the egg itself without this wrap and miso. I'd love to have the onion though.

While eating, beef noodle was served.
The soup was brown and some sort of soy sauce based topped with chopped beef, spinach-ish leaves, and takana (a variety of brassica juncea).
Takana is a type of tsukemono ( Japanese pickle) and usually it's spicy hot.
The beef looked a little bit chewy though seemed it observed the soup well.
Noodle was slightly yellow, so I guess it's an egg noodle.
Soup had strong star anise fragrance. If you're fan of the spice, you'd enjoy it for sure.

And here comes my crab meat fried rice!!
I wasn't sure if I'd get this fried claw since this is half size.
Table next to us ordered a full size so that they had 2 claws.
This fried rice was really good and I personally highly recommend.
The rice was not sticky so that every single rice was separated and individually mixed well with other ingredients.
It wasn't too salty or too weak, just a right amount of seasoning.
(Usually it's said that to make this non-sticky fried rice is difficult and it requires strong fire to cook.)
I tried the fried claw. OOOOHHHHHH!!!!
The claw was solid and filled with crab meat!

To summarize;
Taste: Great. I'm really happy.
Variety: Sufficient. It could be hard to decide!
Portion: Pretty big. If you wanna try several plates, it'd be better to go there with a group of people.
Price: Lunch set is cheap (starting from 500 JPY), but it seems available only on weekdays.
Except weekdays lunch set, there're wide price range from inexpensive to not-reasonable dishes (like bird's-nest soup was 6,000 JPY).
Service: Ok. Even though it's not owned by a Japanese, the way they lead us to the table was as good as other restaurants, they spoke pretty good Japanese (they could even speak honorific and modest language).
Bill: UNCLEAR. I really need to stress this out. They didn't show us the bill so I couldn't tell if they deducted any price from the half size fried rice or couldn't see how much the wrap for the egg was.
Well, I'd rather pay full amount on the fried rice for half size than leaving tons of foods to be thrown away afterwards, but still it's my habit to check the list before paying the money.

総評の要約のみ日本語も追加。
