Soup Curry From Shinjuku Dominica

(Japanese follows. /

I wanted some curry, and I tried a soup curry at Shinjuku Dominica.
Soup Curry is a type of Japanese curry, and the origin is in Sapporo, Hokkaido.
It's said that Chinese and Korean food therapy soup and South India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thai curry which tend to have a lot of soup were the image of soup curry.
The first soup curry was born in Ajanta, a coffee shop in Sapporo, in 1971, they say.
The characteristic aspects of soup curry are watery soup with spices and large pieces of vegetables.

I got there a little bit before 1:30 PM and sat at a counter, and soon a menu was brought.
They still had lunch menu, so I decided to get a Lunch Plate, which comes with salad and drink.
But you can't choose the type of salad or drink.
Then I chose "vegetables" instead of boneless chicken, and "rice" instead of naan.
Next, I chose soup "deep yellow" among yellow, black, white and red.
Deep yellow is a mix of original soup (yellow) and curry spices and coconut.
And I chose the spiciness "4," that is "deliciously spicy/"

In about 3 minutes, my curry was brought.
On a plate, there're mini salad, a bowl of soup curry with vegetables, saffron rice and mango lassi.

Mini salad was cabbage and Mizuna with Ponzu dressing.
* Ponzu is soy sauce with citrus juice.

Soup curry was a bowl of large pieces of vegetables.
There're egg, white sesame, lotus root, cabbage, onion, mitsuba, baby corn, green pepper, eggplant, carrot, kidney bean, burdock, mountain yam, pumpkin and potato.

The curry was very watery but it had orthodox or every stronger curry flavor.

Saffron rice.
There's no way I could put a spoon with rice in the soup curry as it's filled with chunks of vegetables, so I started working on vegetables first to make enough space.
All the vegetables were absorbing curry spices well, but I could still taste each veggie flavor.
Then I scooped some rice and soaked in the soup curry.
I'm used to thicker and creamier texture, so I felt like I was dipping the rice in curry flavored water though it tasted quite good.
I got tired of relating the same process to scoop some rice and dunk in the soup curry, so I put all the rice into the bowl.
In the end, I felt like I was eating a curry risotto.

It's my first time to try soup curry, and I thought it'd not have much flavor as it's so watery, but it actually had a deep and flavorful spices.
Yet, the consistency was as thin as water, and it's hard to eat the large pieces of vegetables, so I prefer Indian curry or regular Japanese curry.

There're some people who were told to hurry up to order as the lunch time was almost finished, so if you're going there around 1:30 PM, you'd better decide as quickly as possible.
They didn't clean the counter well so that there're some greasy spots and curry left on the table, so I'd recommend you be careful when you go there.

  1. That saffron rice looks interesting, I always choose naan over rice when I go to curry house. I'll make sure to try having this saffron rice when I visit the shop!

    1. I usually choose naan, but as it's soup curry, I decided to get rice :)
