Cheese Ramen From Taiyo No Tomato Men

(Japanese follows. /

I went to a ramen chain called "Taiyo No Tomato Men," and its literal translation is "Tomato Noodle of Sun."

Tiayo No Tomato Men is owned by Eat & Co., Ltd founded in 1977, and the ramen shop's concept is "healthy" and "LOHAS" since their first launch in 2006.
* LOHAS: Lifestyle Of Health And Sustainability

The characteristic part of this ramen is the soup.
Regular ramens use pork or chicken (or mixed) soup, but this chain uses tomato with chicken base.
So, the bowl you get looks like a tomato soup with pasta.
Not only the soup, but also other aspects are very unique as the following.
Soup: Chicken soup --- low calories
Soup 2: Tomato --- contains lycopene which has whitening ability and helps prevent aging
Noodles: Made with soy milk --- contains isoflavone
Rice: Sprouted brown rice --- high in fiber, Vitamin E and GABA
Salt: Rock salt from Mongol --- high in mineral
Jasmin Green Tea: refreshing flavor
Edona: Known as "Takana," leaf mustard --- high in Vitamin and can be eaten raw
Rice: Man'nan Hikari --- processed rice to have high fiber and it's cooked with regular rice to reduce calories by 25%
Oil: Recicle --- collect used oil from all the branches and use it to run buses in Kyoto
Non-smoking: All day non-smoking at any shops

I first went to one of the branches in Tokyo back in 2009, but after that, I didn't get a chance to go to any as there's no shop near where I worked or lived.
At that time, I tried only regular "Taiyo No Ramen," which is the simplest ramen of the shop.

The one in Shijuku Mylord opens at 11:00 AM, so I got there a bit after 11:20.
I was alone so I sat at a counter, and they said there's a basket underneath the table so I put my bag there.
In the shop, the base color was white so that the inside was pretty bright.
There're already about 7 groups in the shop.

Soon a waitress handed me a hot towel an d a glass.
She placed a jar of Jasmine Green tea, so I poured on my own.

Menu

Set menu

The waitress said the most popular menu is C set, that is Cheese Ramen (cheese topping), rice and wrapped cheese fries, so I decided to try this one.
While waiting, I found there're 3 types of condiments in front of me.

From left, there're black pepper, chili oil and tabasco.
Except black pepper, the other 2 aren't to be found at classic ramen shops.

Shortly, C set was served.
And the waitress asked me if I wanted a paper apron.
I personally didn't use it but it's very useful especially those who wear white clothes.

Ramen & cheese topping

The tomato soup was sour and had rich tomato flavor with chicken soup.
Also it had garlic flavor so that I felt like I was drinking tomato soup, not ramen soup.
It's also a light soup and not greasy.

I didn't know the ramen would be served with some chickens, and they're all thigh meat with skin.
I had a bite but it's really stinky that I took all the chickens out.
Next time when I go, I'll ask them no chicken on the ramen.

Noodles were smooth and silky.
They're square shaped and white.
I saw fresh tomato dices and also Edona (leaf mustard) was raw so that I enjoyed the crunchiness.

Cheese tended to sink so I picked up noodles from the bottom scooping the melted cheese.
Noodles with cheese and tomato soup, I felt like I was eating pasta dish.

When I ate half of it, I found this mini note on the wall explaining how to eat Cheese Ramen properly.
I wished I had known it earlier...
"Don't mix the cheese and soup with chopsticks or a china spoon but pick up cheese with noodles so that cheese won't sink at the bottom.
To enjoy Cheese Ramen the most, 'Ra-Rizo' is highly recommended!"
* Ra-Rizo is a made-up word of "Ramen and Risotto."

Cheese wrapped fries.
Cheese was wrapped in a won-ton dough and fried topped with tomato sauce and dried basil.

Cheese inside was melted and outside was very crispy.

The rice was topped with fried garlic and dried basil.

I put the rice into the bowl after eating noodles.

And mixed the rice with soup well.
Fine fried garlic chips added extra strong garlic flavor to the soup.
And the garlic chips were crunchy.

The way it looked was definitely ramen but it tasted very western like pasta with tomato soup.
I like this ramen but I don't know if I can call this a ramen.

So far, I've reviewed the following Ramen shops.
Won-Ton Ramen From Hayashimaru
Tenshinmen From Kotobuki
Fu-unji
Tohakkei
Nagi
Godaime Keisuke
Tsukemen Gachi
Men-ya Kaijin
Hentai Kamen
Toyama Black From Menya Iroha
Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop
Ramen-ya Rock 'N' Roll One

Taiyo No Tomato Men / 太陽のトマト麺
Odakyu Shinjuku Myloard 7F, 1-1-3, Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku, Tokyo

  1. I finally tried this ramen yesterday and love it very much. I wanted to try the recommended menu like yours but as I wasn't that hungry yesterday, I decided to get the plain eggplant ramen without the set. I'll certainly come back for the cheese and ra-rizo! Thanks a lot for the recommendation! I think I've found a "ramen" shop I like :)
