Izakaya Mew

(Japanese follows. /

I saw a friend of mine from college yesterday in NYC, and she's craving some Japanese Teishoku (meal set) for lunch as it's not easy to find good Japanese food in the area where she lives in Germany.
I searched Japanese restaurants in midtown and found Izakaya Mew who has many choices.

It's located in Korean Town and there's not much signs and it's a low-keyed appearance so that we passed by not noticing it.
However, I remember seeing this basement restaurant was busy when I had dinners nearby.

Going down the narrow stairs.

It's cash only during lunch hour.

The hall staffs seemed to be all or mainly Japanese.
A female staff near the counter table wasn't that pleasant as she clearly showed annoyance and wasn't helpful when she saw us with a baby car.
My friend and her husband folded the baby car and stored it near the waiting space, then we're taken to a table.

It's about 1:50 PM on a weekday, but more than 80% of the tables was taken.

Menu

We're to fill in the form and hand it to a staff to order.
Teishoku is MEAL, that comes with rice, miso soup, salad and pickles.
We put "X" instead of numbers, but a staff went through the order before taking it to the kitchen so that we didn't have any problem.

I got Saba Shioyaki (grilled mackerel with salt) Teishoku.
In about 10 minutes, my plate was ready.
Salmon Teishoku was ready the earliest and it took them close to 20 minutes to serve Karaage Teishoku (deep fried chicken).
The meal looked great but also I had a weird a weird feeling as the order of the dishes wasn't practical.
(Traditionally, the rice always comes on the front left, soup is on the front right, main is back of the right, and the little plates of vegetables are back of the left.)
Many Japanese are right-handed so that the rice is held with a left hand, thus the rice is set at the left bottom.
Those plates in the back is meant not to be held because if you stretch the arm, the sleeve may get dirty.

Anyways, except the layout, they looked tasty and mackerel was grilled perfectly.

The skin was grilled to crisp and made crunchy noise when I cut with chopsticks, the flesh was soft and juicy, and it's salted nicely.

Pickles
Carrots and white sesame seeds.

Salad
Cabbage and roughly chopped boiled egg, and I tasted yuzu (citrus fruit).
Miso soup had tofu, seaweed and naganegi onions.

I thought the 10 dollars for Teishoku was reasonable, especially Ootoya is charging 17 dollars for something similar.
Not only was the price good, but also it tasted as authentic as what I eat in Japan.
I'll visit this place again when I want some Japanese Teishoku.
