Atka Mackerel Yuuan Yaki Set From Ootoya (Roppongi)
To summarize, they cook the plates to order so that the ingredients would be consumes at its best.
In the miso soup, there're seaweed.
On the right top, there're pickles in the orange-pink cup.
To the left, there's soy sauce for the grated daikon radish (next to miso soup), but I don't use much condiment so that I left eh soy sauce but put some daikon radish for the fish.
Atka Macherel Yuuan Yaki was soft and moist inside, and was lightly seasoned.
There're sliced red onions underneath and they're very spicy and fresh.
Seaweed, Hijiki (a type of seaweed) and soybeans.
Grain rice had variety of textures and flavors, and it was more fulfilling than regular white rice.
Salad of dried radish strips, shiitake mushrooms, lettuce, carrots and field peas.
(Japanese follows. /
I went to Ootoya with my friend when I came back to Japan as a branch in Chelsea in NYC had a long queue the price was about twice or close to triple the price in Japan.
Ootoya (大戸屋) is a Japanese food restaurant chain and its motto is "to serve mother's homemade dishes for reasonable prices."
It started business in 1958, and currently, not only in Japan but also they run business in overseas.
This time, we went to the one near Roppongi station.
It's located on the 2nd floor, and I noticed that many of them are either on the 2nd floor or in the basement.
When I looked up the reasons, I found interesting facts.
First, it's cheaper to rent the space if it's not on the 1st floor.
And secondly, it's a unique point, but it's because some female customers may hesitate to line up among mainly male customers.
Regarding the point 2, to be honest, I personally didn't think it makes much sense since the waiting line would occur no matter what floor the restaurant is located, and also during lunch time, it's pretty busy anywhere you go and I see people lining up in lines which are mixed of male and female.
Thus, I don't think there're not many people who would mind the sex ratio.
Menu
In longways, it says, "plates that are considerate to your health."
To summarize, they cook the plates to order so that the ingredients would be consumes at its best.
Not like other restaurant chains, Ootya cooks at each branch and doesn't have a central kitchen, which means a large factory-ish establishment where they prepare the meals and send them to each branch to keep the cost low and have more space in the restaurants.
It's hard for me to choose a dish, but I chose a fish set.
It's called "Atka Mackerel Yuuan Yaki Set."
Atka mackerel is a type of mackerel with strips.
Yuuan Yaki (ゆう庵焼き) is a way to prepare and cook.
Yuuan is to marinate fish in a mixture of mirin (sweet cooking rice wine), soy sauce and sake, and Yaki is a form of Yaku (焼く, infinitive form to grill), so it's a marinated and grilled fish.
For the rice, I could choose the size (small, regular and large) and for small, they deduct 20 yen from the bill and large is free of charge.
Also, I could change to grain rice without any extra fee.
I chose a small rice and asked to change it into grain rice.

Sometimes I cook Japanese dish at home, but to buy ingredients is quite expensive so that I tend to substitute them to something similar.
And to be able to eat various items in a set like this for the price (811 yen before tax) is really nice.
Next, I gotta try one of the Ootoya outside of Japan to see the price matches the quality and the quantity.
