Afternoon Tea At The Gryphon d'Or Tea Room

(Japanese follows. /

My husband found one of the high-reviewed afternoon tea places a little bit off site of the centre-ville, Montreal.
It's called Gryphon d'Or, pronounced as Gryffindor from Harry Potter.
It's not somewhere easy to access but it's got great reviews especially scones and the unique Celtic tea selections.

Afternoon tea must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance, so my husband called the cafe one day before and they had opening at 3 PM for the following day, so we booked afternoon tea sets.
We arrived at the cafe and there're 7 tables, mix of 4 and 2 persons size, and 5 of them was taken.
Though we're there much earlier than the reservation time, they let us seat so that we didn't have to wait in cold.
Tea strainer was teapot shaped.

Soon after we're seated, a waitress brought us a set of tea leaf jars to choose tea from.
She said the most famous one was "Celtic Comfort" which she also recommended, too, so I ordered that one.
There're 12 jars with various flavors and she added that Celtic tea is very similar to Darjeeling.
The tea leaves are; Vanilla, Earl Grey Cream, Celtic Mint, Celtic Comfort, Celtic Classic, Ginger, Celtic Calypso, Apricot Brandy, Vanilla Orange, English Breakfast, Mango and Celtic Garden.

She brought 2 pots for us and said let it steam for 3 minutes.
When I poured the tea into a cup, it looked like regular English tea and tasted like Darjeeling, however, the distinguished part was that the tea got flowery scent --- I could see some flower petals in the pot and the jar I looked at.
It didn't bother me at all as it's very light, but it was very unique and different from flavor or herb teas.

First they brought freshly baked scones to start with and raspberry jam (in a jar), butter, lemon curd and cream were served with them.
Scones had similar texture to American KFC's biscuits (Japanese one is different), and it's plain scones so that any kind of condiments went well but my favorite was butter as I could enjoy the subtly salted scones which brought sweetness of flour.
Raspberry jam was a little bit runny and watery, and it's not too sweet, which was good.

By the way, water is self-serve here.

After we finished all the scones, we'd been waiting for about 30 minutes to have high tea stand; the place was small but constantly people were coming in and it's always close to full.
The waitress came and apologized that it's taking so long and added hot water to the pot while waiting the food was coming.

Finally the 3-tiered stand was brought.

Top plate is smoked salmon on blini.

Second plate is sandwiches.

The bottom was confectioneries.

Smoked Salmon on Blini
Salmon was salty and the cream cheese over the blini was blunt so that it matched well.

Cucumber Sandwich
Mayonnaise and mustard were used only a few so that I could eat without feeling sick.
Cucumbers were sliced really thin and the bread was whole grain and white bread.

Egg Sandwich
Heart-shaped sandwich contained boiled egg with mayo, and the amount of mayo they used was less than I thought, but still I only could have a bite (and my husband had to eat all the egg sandwich).
This was also using both whole grain and white bread.

Pecan Pie
This mini pecan pie contained big chunks of pecan nuts and was very sugary so that this little size was perfect.

Lemon Square
I think it was my first time to try lemon square in my life and I didn't know it'd be this much sweet.
It's thick, creamy and surprisingly sweet.
The bottom cookie crumbs were crispy and excellent.

Strawberry (...something)
I forgot the full name of this, but it was won-ton crust cup holding yogurt flavored white cream and strawberry jam.

Shortbread Cookie
It's my favorite on the plate!
Salty but sweet and crispy shortbread cookie can't go wrong.

Chocolate Cake
It's bitter chocolate and the texture and flavor was close to cream cheese.

I think the scones were great, tea selection was interesting, but other things are just average and to me, to have a lot of blini with solo kind was a little bit off.
Sandwiches were ok but if the numbers served are big, I'd rather have more varieties.
Sweets, they tend to be all super sweet (except the shortbread cookie.)
If I visit here again, I'm interested in regular brunch menu or maybe only scones.

Afternoon tea set: 25 CND dollars (tax included) + tip (we added 15%)
