I Tried Almond Milk For The First Time In My Life

(Japanese follows. /

I recently learned there's a milk made from almond, but till I saw a commercial of "Almond Breeze" in Japan, I'd never known anything about almond milk before.
Not knowing what almond milk, I couldn't tell if it's greasy as almond, has weird sweetness or just as thin as low-fat or non-fat cow's milk.

My husband found an article explaining the differences between almond milk and cow's milk (hereinafter, "milk").

<History>
According to the article, almond milk has been used as a substitute for milk since the Middle Ages.
As milk doesn't keep very long without refrigeration, medieval people processed it into butter and cheese to preserve it. They used almond milk in cooking and baking, since it's easier to store.
*Almond milk is made by mixing finely ground almonds with water and straining it to remove almond skins and sediment.

<Nutritional value>
Almond milk
It's one of the most nutritionally valuable milk substitute today.
It contains high in a number of vitamins, minerals, manganese, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, selenium, iron, fiber, zinc and calcium.
Almond milk is low in calories (40 calories per 8 oz.) and low in fat (3g of fat per 8 oz.)
Almond milk is lactose, gluten, casein and cholesterol free; it's also free of saturated fats.
Unlike milk, it's safe for those who are lactose intolerant or have gluten and casein allergies.

Cow's Milk
Whole cow's milk is a very nutritious food as it's high in protein.
8 oz. cup of milk has 28% of your daily requirement of calcium, and fortified milk helps to fulfill your daily vitamin A and D requirements. However, whole milk is high in fat, and saturated fat.
Milk also contains 24 mg of cholesterol per serving, and contains 146 calories per serving.
While cow's milk contains high levels of calcium, and is fortified with vitamins A and D to help you meet your daily requirements of these vitamins, almond milk contains high levels of a wide range of necessary vitamins and therefore has a higher nutritional value than cow's milk.
The only thing that cow's milk has more of than almond milk is protein; cow's milk has eight grams of protein per serving while almond milk has only one gram per serving.

My first almond milk ever was from Whole Foods Market and has a trademark called "365 Everyday Value."
I chose "unsweetened" to see how it tastes like.
On the package, it says ORGANIC on the top and VEGAN logo surrounded by "non-dairy" and also "lactose free" as this milk is made from nuts.
It has OU kosher symbol at the left bottom.
And I just learned the OU kosher is the world's largest kosher certifying agency.

On the side,
"Our unsweetened almondmilk is made from premium quality organic almonds. With no added syrup or sweeteners, the delicate nutty flavor comes from premium quality almonds alone.
Calcium and vitamin enriched, we can't think of a more delicious way to boost your nutrition (and quench your thirst) - enjoy!"
I see how premium the almonds they use are and this has almond flavor.

On the back, ingredients and notification of allergic items, and information after opening the package.
And also there're marks of vegan, non-dairy, gluten-free, low fat, and no sugar added.

On the top, it says "Shake well before opening" so I made sure to shake it.

Under the plastic lid, there's a sliver seal to peel off.
I didn't really sense any characteristic almond flavor.

While pouring, I still didn't smell anything.
The almond milk seemed shinier than milk.

When I poured good amount into a glass and put my nose close, I smelled a little bit of almond flavor.
I imagined it'd smell sweet like almond jelly, but it didn't have any sweet scent.
The color was pale ivory and looked velvety.
It didn't have strong almond flavor so I didn't feel weird while drinking this.
The texture was smooth and thicker than milk.
If you don't like soy milk due to the smell or the taste, this could be your substitute milk.

<栄養価>

唯一アーモンドミルクが牛乳に劣る点は、タンパク質の含有量;

365 Everyday Value
