Harry Potter Themed Birthday

(Japanese follows. /

Almost every year, as soon as my birthday is over, I start thinking what to do for my husband's birthday which is about a month later than mine.
He wanted another Sailor Venus cake this year, but I said no because I'm a type of person who doesn't repeat the same surprises.

I thought over what he likes, and I decided to recreate some Harry Potter themed decoration and food.
As it's such a famous and popular books and movies, there're many blogs and ideas that I could find online.
If I was familiar with the details of the series, it would have been easier to prepare, and every time I encountered some names or dishes, I had to research what they were before choosing to throw into my plans.

Roughly speaking, I prepared the following.
1. Acceptance Letter & Envelope
2. Brick Wall & Hogwarts Express Sign
3. Portion Labels
4. Floating Candles
5. Food Labels
6. Bathroom Decorations
7. Prep Meals (dough, filling, etc.)
8. Owl Balloons

Acceptance Letter & Envelope

I used a cotton ball and tinted with black tea and let it dry.
Letter: http://www.seanlockephotography.com/2013/07/18/youve-been-accepted-to-hogwarts/

Envelope: The video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSdIo151S1U) has "Envelope Template" to download.
After drying the letter and envelope, the papers got very crispy and fragile, and I highly recommend you pre-fold the envelope before tinting them.

In the YouTube, it's created by Photoshop, but I can't use that and instead, I made it with PowerPoint.
Once it's completed, I clicked "Presentation Slide" which you can see it on the full screen, and I took a screenshot, pasted on Word, stretched to the maximum and printed out.

Font: http://decat.deviantart.com/art/Acceptance-Letter-311198494
* Only "under" is in Zapfino font.

It was "LONDON TO HOGWARTS" in the link above, so I used PowerPoint and changed the LONDON to NEW YORK, also I added a similar color behind "NEW YORK" to match the background color (beige) of the ticket.
* I wish I knew how to use Photoshop...

Finished envelope.

Brick Wall & Hogwarts Express Sign
I bought the cheapest white cloth which was big enough to cover the door.

I mixed brown and red brick acrylic color, then added some drops of water.

I used a ready-to-throw-away dish sponge and stamped the cloth.

When the water is too much, the "brick" would smudge.
To make it look realistic, you can just lightly press the sponge and to make the blocks blurry.

Fold the top and sew it, and put through a tension pole.

After setting the brick wall, cut the center to about a foot below the top.

Express Sign: http://jonesing2create.com/free-harry-potter-printables-decorations/

I put wooden chopsticks to make it stand still.

Taped the sign on the door frame.

Portion Labels
http://overthebigmoon.com/halloween-decor-harry-potter-potion-bottles-free-printable/

I collected glass jars for the last 1 month and put the labels with double-sided tapes.

Some pieces of the original labels on the jars didn't come off, and they're bright white so that I patted with brown painting color with a cotton ball.

I put food coloring and water.

Floating Candles
To keep the cost low, I used the cores of toilet paper and painted them white, then I used orange film.
First I made 2 holes on the side of the toilet paper tube with a safety pin.

I held the tube with my index and middle finger when painting to keep my hand least dirty.
(It's like you're making a peace sign.)

I painted the inner side for about 1-2 inches from the bottom so that you won't immediately see the brown paper color when you're looking up.

Acrylic color.

While looking for orange film, I realized that I had a bag of Halos at home, and the orange and yellow parts were perfect for the fire.

I got 12 "fires" after cutting them out.

When the painting was dried, I re-punched the holes with a safety pin to make the holes clear to lace the plastic string for beads crafting.

I tied the string 2-3 times and left a enough length to hang from the ceiling, and the length of each candle was random.

I attached the orange film on the string.

Back side was almost white.

And I painted the back side with orange Sharpie.

I hung them with masking tape from the ceiling.

Food Labels
Frames: http://www.labelyasan.com/gallery_templates/search/page:1/keyword:10/parts:0
Fonts: Acceptance Letter, Lumos, Zapfino.

Screenshot the frames and located the special font letters over them by using PowerPoint.
* Again, I wish I could use Photoshop.

Bathroom Decorations
"Ministry of Magic This Way"
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/8107TEy-FWL._SL1500_.jpg

"Moaning Myrtle"
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/518195500851304432/

Prep Meals
I prepared cookie dough, ice cream mixed with butter, cottage pie filling, pita bread dough, cake model and wings for Golden Snitches.

"Broomsticks"
Reference: http://communitytable.parade.com/412773/kavitharamaswamy/39-magical-harry-potter-inspired-recipes/#gallery_412773-6

I made black pepper & cheese cookie dough for Broomsticks and also "Mandrake Salad."

Tore string cheese and stuck the skinny cookies to the other end.

"Mandrake Salad"
I found an interesting recipe (http://cookpad.com/recipe/2844473) but it's for pastry, so I decided to make it for savory using the same dough for "Broomsticks" to hide in the salad.

I used kitchen paper to absorb excess water of the salad and placed the 3 Mandrake and covered them with more salad leaves.

"Butterbeer"
I mixed caramel ice cream with butter after reading the following recipe (http://cookpad.com/recipe/2711524), but I didn't measure precisely.

I melted Edy's Caramel Delight ice cream and mixed with melted butter, then put it into freezer.

In the glass, I poured A&W Diet Cream Soda, one scoop of ice cream mixed with butter and topped it with whipped cream.

I put almost the same amount for each glass, but the right glass, which I made later than the left glass, started bubbling earlier.

By the time I brought them to the table, the right glass had erupting forms.

"Happee Birthdae Harry Cake"
Reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50N2eB0JI80

This is the model I made to make it easy to decorate. (12cm in diameter.)

I didn't have a compass, but this is how to make a perfect circle.

(1) Fold the paper into half 2 times.

To make it easy, I added dotted lines to show the folded lines.

(2) Mark the center where the 2 folded lines are crossed.
(3) This time, I'm making a circle of radius 3cm, so I marked at 3cm on one of the lines.

(4) Mark on another line at 3cm from the center dot.
* The second dot must be in 90 degrees, not opposite side (180 degrees).

(5) Placing the ruler's 0 at the center dot, shift the angles of the ruler between the 2 dots and mark at 3cm.

(6) Slightly moving the ruler to either side and mark at 3cm from the center dot.

(7) Once you're completed 1/4 on the paper, you're ready to cut.

(8) Fold the paper in half.

(9) Fold the paper one more time (like step 1).

(10) Hold the paper tightly and cut the dotted line with scissors.

(11) Cut completed.

(12) Voila! You have a perfect circle without compass.

For cake, I used Betty Crocker Super Moist Yellow Cake Mix.

Following the direction, I baked the cake and when it's cooled off, I placed the model over the sponge and cut it out.

Frosting.

The left is for the cake, and the right, it's crumbled sponge cake which was left after taking the cake out.
The crumbled cake is to make cake pops, so I added some frosting.

I took some frosting out and set it in the bowl, then added food coloring to the contents in the cup to make the white frosting pink.

Covered the cake fully with the pink frosting.

With a toothpick, I made a crack.

Adding green and blue coloring into the separated frosting to make deep green.

As seen in the movie, I intentionally spelled it wrong.

"Golden Snitch"
Crumbled sponge cake and frosting mixed together till it became soft and moist.

Rolled the dough into balls, then put them into freezer.

While letting the balls cool, I melted the yellow colored chocolate.

Coated the balls with melted yellow chocolate.

After coating all the balls, I put them into refrigerator.

For the wings, I made a model of the wing and folded parchment paper, placed the model, outlined it as many as I could make.

Cut the wings out.

Cut at the center (folded line).

Place the set of wings near the balls.
If the cake pops has cracks, you can put melted yellow chocolate over and hide them.

Add a bit of chocolate to the root.

Attached the wings to a balls.

Let them sit till the wings are set.

Pearl Dust to finish up.

With a soft brush, I put some sparkling dust on the top.

"Sorting Hat"
Resource: http://www.diamondsfordessert.com/2010/01/sorting-hat.html

The dough I made was too heavy for the aluminum foil cone so I put an ice cream scoop to hold the shape while baking.

Brim

It stood ok.

But from the side, it didn't look like the site I followed.

"Cottage Pie"

I decided to make many mini pies and used this muffin tin.
At the bottom, I placed pie sheet.

Put filling.

I used this instant mashed potatoes by Betty Crocker.

Covered the top with the mashed potato.

Put patterns with a fork.

Baked for 25 minutes at 300F.

"The Grand Feast"
I bought corns with husks on, then wrapped the corns with plastic wrap leaving husk unwrapped and microwaved for 10 minutes.
Between corns, there're broccoli, carrots and cauliflower.
On the left, beef steak with bone and chicken breast, on the right, there're mini Cottage Pies.

All the dishes except the whole cake.

Owl Balloons
I got these 4 balloons at Party City near Penn Station today, but walking back with these balloons in NYC on a weekend was quite challenging; too many people, constructions, and it's windy, too.
(They didn't put them into a bag but gave me these bare.)

Resource: http://partytailor.com/2014/11/02/harry-potter-halloween-owl-balloons/
I used this as Hedwig.
In a large envelope, I put the Acceptance Letter and taped this Hedwig balloon, then gave it to the doorman and asked to give this to my husband.

Owls for the decoration.

The decoration.

"Have You Seen This Wizard?"

I used PowerPoint again and put my husband's photos into the frames.
I chose "Presentation Slide," took screenshots, pasted them on Word, stretched the photos to the extent and printed out.

http://overthebigmoon.com/halloween-decor-harry-potter-potion-bottles-free-printable/

(Ministry of Magic This Way)
