I Tried "Skyberry," A Kind Of Strawberry
スカイベリーという品種を食べてみた

When I saw my mom, we went to Takashimaya, a department store, in Shinjuku just to look around, then we saw a section of fruits at the basement selling department-store-priced fruits.
And there're gigantic strawberries called "Skyberry."
Coincidentally, I saw the breed on TV in the morning, so I knew they're large but seeing with my own eyes was a different story.
There's a box with about 16 pieces for 5,000 yen and plus, but I didn't want to gamble so I got a box of 2 packs with 6 strawberries each for 1,620 yen (tax incl.).
There's a leaflet about Skyberry.
"Very large, very beautiful and very tasty.
They spent 17 years to create Skyberry from more than 100,000 kinds of strawberries.
It's a premium strawberry with the size, shape and juiciness and tastiness."
On the other side.
I did some more research and on November 15, 2011, they applied to Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan to register the breed.
On September 7, 2012, it's registered as trademark, so it's relatively a new breed.
Each tray had 6 pieces.
In comparison with a 100 yen coin, and it seemed to be able to hold more than 2 coins for the length.
A quarter coin is larger than 100 yen, but still the strawberry could easily hold 2 coins.
From the wrist to the tip of middle finger of my hand is about 19cm (7.5 inch), so I think this piece was about 8cm (3.15 inch) long.
This strawberry was really large and heavy.

The diameter was much larger than coins, too.
It's really sweet, flavorful, and also juicy.
When I bit, the juice flooded out and I had to sip even, and I think this is the juiciest strawberry I've had in my life.
Also it took me more than 3 big bites to finish this, and there's no way to eat this humongous and juicy piece at one bite.

そこで「デパート値段」の果物が売られている一角があり、そこに「スカイベリー」と
いうイチゴがあった。
偶然、朝見たテレビでスカイベリーを紹介していたので大きいのは知っていたけれど、
実物を見るとその巨大さに驚いた。
16粒ほど入って5,000円超のものがあったけれど、それを買う勇気はなかったので、1箱に
2パックが収められた計12粒入りの税込1,620円のスカイベリーを買うことにした。
中にはスカイベリーについて書かれたリーフレットが入っていた。
「ベリー大粒 ベリーきれい ベリーおいしい
とちおとめ以来17年の歳月をかけ、10万株以上の中から生まれた『スカイベリー』。
大きさも、形も、ジューシーな美味しさも。
まさにプレミアム級です。」
調べてみると、2011年11月15日に農林水産省に品種登録を出願し、2012年9月7日に商標
登録された。
なので、比較的新しい品種らしい。
100円玉と比べてみると、2枚以上収まるような長さだった。
25ドルコインは少し大きいけれど、簡単に2枚収まる大きさ。
手首から中指までが約19センチなので、このスカイベリーの大きさは約8センチだった。
このイチゴはとてもずっしりとしていた。
直径もどちらの硬貨よりもずっと大きかった。
このイチゴは本当に甘く、香りもよく、そしてジューシーだった。
かじった時に果汁が溢れ出し、吸わないといけなかったほどで、これまで食べたイチゴで
1番水分の多いものだった。
また、1粒食べるのに大きな3口以上が必要で、1口では絶対に食べられない大きさと
果汁だった。
