Momotan "Nama-Guso"
ももたん「生グソ」

Last year, 2014, I heard Nationaldepart Co., Ltd. in Okayama prefecture launched a new flavored "Momotan" called "Nama-Guso."
Momotan is a popular souvenir (they say) from Okayama, and it's a bite-size Manju, which is a Japanese confectionery consisting of flour dough wrapping sweet red bean jam inside and steamed.
Narita Airport has a shop selling Momotan, and I went to check the shop but they didn't have it.
But today, January 25, 2015, I visited again and found the "Nama-Guso" and I bought it immediately.
What really made me wanna try the item is the name.
"Nama-Guso" is written as "生グソ" and 生 (Nama) means raw or fresh, and グソ (Guso) is a different form of noun "クソ (Kuso)" with dull sound, and it literally means "shit."
So, when I first heard about this product, I thought of "fresh poop."
However, apparently they abbreviated "生グレープフルーツソフト味 (Nama Grapefruit Soft Flavor)" which is an Akita prefecture's famous shaved ice flavor.
On the lid, there's a same character wearing a soft ice cream hat.
At the bottom, it says "生グソ" (Nama-Guso)" again.
Both sides had "Momotan."
On the back, there's a description of the flavor with Momotan character with white soft ice cream hat and a folklore in Akita called "Namahage."
【Nama-Guso Flavor】
We put milk flavored sweetened white bean paste made with grapefruit in soft ice cream flavored dough.
Please enjoy the combination of the flavors which were designed to recreate the famous shave ice cream in Akita prefecture "Nama-Guso."
In the box, there's a pouch of Momotan Nama-Guso flavor and a leaflet.
There're 4 Manju in a pouch.
In the center of the plastic bag, there's a peach with "ももたん (Momotan)" logo.
On the back of the plastic bag, it recommends that cooling in a refrigerator makes the Manju also tasty.

Now I see that that it's a bowl of shaved ice with grapefruit sauce on the bottom and topped with a soft ice cream with a spoon in the shaved ice.
Back side of the leaflet was a long sentence with Akita prefecture dialect and idioms about Nama-Guso, but it's so long that I'm skipping the translation.
Pale beige Momotan with Nama-Guso flavor.
At the bottom, it's all smooth and even and I couldn't tell where they closed after putting sweetened white bean paste with grapefruit as there's no way to find a spot where the filling was put.
The skin of Manju was about 5mm and it's moist, and the filling was smooth and the texture was like wet sand to make a sand castle.
In the sweet filling, there're dices of grapefruit flesh or skin, and as soon as I bit, refreshing citrus flavor opened up.
Eating the skin only, I tasted sweet flavor close to milk flavored ice cream.
I enjoyed this Nama-Guso flavored Momotan.
昨年2014年、岡山のナショナルデパート株式会社から「ももたん」に「生グソ」という
フレーバーが加わったと知った。
ももたんは岡山のお土産として人気のようで、1口サイズのおまんじゅうらしい。
成田空港にももたんを販売しているお店があると知り、成田空港を利用した際に探して
みたけれど見つからなかった。
今日、2015年1月25日に再訪してみたら「生グソ」があり、すぐに購入。
この商品が気になった理由は「生グソ」という名前。
商品名を聞いた時に頭に浮かんだのは、文字通り「生の糞」だった。
ただ、調べて見ると、これは秋田ご当地かき氷「生グレープフルーツソフト味」の略との
ことだった。
蓋部分には表と同じソフトクリームの帽子を被ったキャラクターが載っていた。
底には「生グソ」があり、両側面には「ももたん」と記載されていた。
裏面にはももたんのキャラクターと秋田のなまはげた載っていて、味の説明もあった。
【生グソ味】
グレープフルーツ入りのミルク白あんをソフトクリーム味のケーキで包んだ傑作の折衷
和洋菓子です。二つの味が口の中ではじけて混ざり合う秋田で話題のかき氷「生グソ」に
メタモルフォーゼしていくイリュージョンをお楽しみください。
箱の中にはプラスチックの袋が1つとリーフレットが1枚入っていた。
袋には4個のおまんじゅうが入っていて、袋の真ん中にはモモの中に「ももたん」と
書かれたロゴがあった。
袋の後ろ側には「冷蔵庫で冷やしても美味しい」と載っていた。
リーフレットを見て、グレープフルーツソースが底にあるかき氷で、その上にソフト
クリームが乗り、スプーンが刺さっているということがやっと分かった。
裏には秋田の方言で生グソの説明があったけれど、長いため割愛。
生グソ味のももたんは淡いベージュで、直径は約5センチで、厚みは2〜3センチ。
底は滑らかな平らで、グレープフルーツを使った白あんを包んだ後の閉じ口が全然見え
ないように、丁寧に閉じられていた。
おまんじゅうの皮は5ミリほどでしっとりし、白あんは滑らかで砂のお城を作る時の砂と
同じくらい湿り気があった。
甘いあんにはグレープフルーツの実か皮が入っていて、食べるとすぐにすっきりした
柑橘系の味と香りがし、皮だけを食べるとミルクアイスのような味がした。
生グソ味のももたんは美味しかった。
