The Most Famous Jewish Deli in Montreal Called Schwartz's

モントリオールで1番有名なジューイッシュデリ 「シュワーツ」

We've heard that there's a Jewish deli on St. Catherine and it's the most popular shop in Montreal.

It's called "Schwartz's" founded in 1928 by Reuben Schwartz's, a Jewish immigrant from Romania, and the location hasn't been changed ever since he opened the deli.

The smoked meat is prepared old-fashioned and marinated in a secret blend of herbs and spices for 10 days and smoked daily without preservatives.

We've passed the shop several times but it's never empty and sometimes I saw a long line towards outside even though it's till cold here.

Today, we decided to try the smoke meat.

We got there before 7:30 PM and the deli was about 70% full so we're luckily seated as soon as we walked in.

Tables were already prepared as they cleaned the table when the customers left.

There's a big menu on the wall and written in French and English.

My husband ordered Salami Sandwich and I ordered Smoked Meat Sandwich besides french fries, a pickle and two diet coke.

* As it's a Jewish deli, they don't have pork; the meat is either beef or chicken.

The staff who took our order said Salami Sandwich would be cold as a reminder.

And when I asked if Smoked Meat would contain mayo, he said, "Nooooo, no mayo. I hate mayo!" with lively but seriously hating mayo.

So this is the place I'd be happy to eat sandwich and we even saw coleslaw without mayo, but vinegar.

Soon soda, a pickle and fries were served.

The pickle was as large as an eggplant and the whole cucumber was seasoned well thoroughly.

Salami Sandwich

Soft and lean beef salami between rye bread without mustard.

No fatty part and very moist.

Smoked Meat Sandwich

This is what I ordered and it's also using rye bread but with mustard.

I'm not a big fan of mustard, so I exchanged the bread with my husband.

Smoked meat on the bread had a good balance of red part and fat, was flavorful with peppery scent.

The meat tasted so good with the bread and also as it was.

When I first looked at the sandwich, I didn't find it that big, however, when I saw it from the side, the sliced smoked meat was piled up high, more than 5cm (2 inch) and just one sandwich filled me up.

A couple who came after and sat near us asked me what the plate I ordered, so I said it's Smoked Meat Sandwich, then they both ordered the sandwich.

The sandwiches were amazing and we're so glad we went there, and we both loved the atmosphere and the employees.

They're the funniest, nicest and most talkative people anywhere we went to in Montreal.

I felt like I was getting more energy by just sitting there.

Smoke Meat Sandwich: 6.65

サンカトリーヌ通りにモントリオールで1番有名なジューイッシュデリ（Jewish deli、ユダヤ系の

デリカテッセン）があると聞いた。

それは「シュワーツ」というお店で、1928年にルーマニア系ユダヤ人移民のルーベン・シュワーツ氏

が設立したデリ。

設立時から今まで、お店は同じ位置にあるらしい。

スモークミート（燻製肉）は昔ながらの方法で作られていて、特別に配合されたハーブとスパイスに

10日間漬け、保存料は一切使用せずに毎日スモークしている。

これまでに何度かデリの前を通ったけれど、お店がガラガラの時は1度もなく、この寒い中でも

外に長い列ができていたのを見たことさえある。

今夜、このデリへお店に行ってみることにした。

19:30前に店舗に着くと7割程度の席のみ埋まっていたので、幸運にもすぐに座ることができた。

お客さんが帰るとすぐに店員さんがテーブルを綺麗に片付けていたので、すでにテーブルは

整っていた。

メニューは壁の上の方に掛かっていて、フランス語と英語で記載されている。

旦那はサラミサンドイッチ、私はスモークミートサンドイッチ、サイドディッシュにポテトとピクルス、

飲み物はダイエットコーラを2つ注文した。

* ユダヤ系デリなので、豚肉ではなく全て牛肉か鶏肉。

私たちの注文を取ったおじさんが、サラミサンドイッチは冷たいサンドイッチだと一言添えてくれ、

私が念のため「スモークミートにはマヨネーズが入っていますか？」と聞いたところ、「絶対に

マヨネーズは入れない。私もマヨネーズ嫌いなんで！」と陽気かつ本気でマヨネーズを拒否。

コールスローもマヨネーズではなくお酢が使われていたので、マヨ嫌いには嬉しいお店。

すぐにコーラとピクルス、ポテトが出された。

ピクルスは日本のナスのような大きさで、中までしっかり味がついていた。

サラミサンドイッチ

旦那が頼んだサラミサンドは、柔らかく脂肪分のないサラミで、とてもしっとりとしていた。

パンにマスタードが付いていない状態で出て来た。

スモークミートサンドイッチ

私が頼んだスモークミートサンドは、サラミサンドと同じライ麦パンに挟まれていた。

私はマスタードがあまり好きではないので、旦那のパンと交換。

スモークミートは赤みと脂身がバランス良く入っていて、香りがよく、胡椒が効いていた。

パンに挟んでたべても、お肉だけで食べても美味しかった。

最初に見た時はそれほど大きくないと思ったけれど、横から見るとスモークミートのスライスが

5センチ以上積まれていて、結構食べごたえがあった。

スモークサンドが美味しそうに見えたのか、後から入ってきて隣に座ったカップルに「それは

どのメニュー？」と聞かれた。

「スモークミートサンドです」と答えると、2人もスモークサンドを頼んでいた。

サンドイッチは本当に美味しくて、食べに行って良かったと思った。

また、味だけでなくお店や店員の雰囲気もとても良かった。

今までモントリオールで行ったお店の中で、1番面白く、親切で、話しやすい店員だった。

お店の中にいるだけで元気がもらえそう。
