Tenshinmen at Kotobuki / 「ことぶき」の天津麺

Another "Ramen Quest" in Koenji tonight.

Near my apartment, there's a shoe repair shop and when I asked him about good ramen in Koenji, he named several places.

I picked up the nearest one from my place called "Kotobuki / ことぶき" and decided to get a specific ramen.
The shoe repairer said they serve pretty good taste foods so cheap, but his recommendation was to get "Tenshinmen."

"Tenshinmen" is a ramen version of "Tenshindon."
For those who have never heard "Tenshindon," here's some explanation.
It's one of the most famous Chinese plate, it's made in Japan and it doesn't exist in China (according to some sources).

Crabmeat, mushroom, and some chopped vegetables in a omelette on rice.
It's named after Tianjin, China.

Getting back to Tenshinmen at Kotobuki, I've been living in Koenji for over 9 years, I knew there's this little family-owned shop.
However, not many people would go that street nor pay attention it's there.
It's on a narrow street and closes at 8:30PM so you could miss this place.
The sign is yellow but not too loud or huge with traditional red sheet covered roof.
From the other side of the road.

I ordered Tenshinmen when I came in and sat at the counter as I was alone, but the cook's wife led me to the table. (sweet!)

Near the entrance, there's a menu board hanging.
On the left top, they recommend Tenshinmen and it was in magazines.
Once I placed an order, the cook started chopping ingredients and mixing eggs.
Since I heard a bubbling sound from the kitchen, I could tell he poured eggs into a hot pan.
Also I could smell that he's using sesame oil to cook the egg.
Already the noodle was tasty in my imagination.

About 5 minutes later, the famous Tenshinmen was served.

The omellete was so big that I couldn't see if there's noodle in the bowl!
Also the floating leaks are covering the bottom completely.
Soy sauce based and clear soup.
Not greasy at all. Maybe the oil was from the egg which used sesame oil.

The omellete was really soft but thick.
Crabemat, mushroom, leek, and bamboo shoot was in the egg.
The noodle was thick but not disgusting-chewy.
It's cooked al dente and had nice texture.
Thanks to the omelette, the noodle stayed warm till I finished eating it all.

The soup and egg reminded me homemade, classic, old-style, and everyone's favorite Japanese-Chinese taste.
I could have had all the soup (if I wasn't full).

I talked with the cook and his wife for a while and found that they've been in business for 50 years.
Only once they moved to the current place from a block away due to some construction (or some other reasons).

Some companies had moved to other places so that they kind of lost big groups of customers and asked me to spread their name :)

It was only 680 yen, and there're other plates I wanted to try.
I'd love to go back to eat other dishes and talk with them as they're really funny and talkative.

Bills at Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku

Not only lately, but there're so many types of restaurants in Tokyo.
One of the remarkable trend is that "breakfast restaurants" are booming:
For example, Eggs'n Things, Rainbow Pancake, and Bills.

Bills is famous for its ricotta cheese pancake, which is set on the highest floor in Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku opened in April 2012.
In Kanto area, there're 4 Bills so far; Shichirigahama and Yokohama (both in Kanagawa pref.) and Odaiba and Omotesando (in Tokyo).

I think Omotesando one was located in the center of busy area and actually convenient to get there without any problem except the crowds.

When we got there, it's around 5pm.
There was a long line to get a table but half of them were already reserved and just waiting to be called their names.

They said it's completely booked till 6pm. We decided to wait in the line.
Luckily, we didn't have to stand in the line that long, it's about 30 minutes before we got a table.

I thought it was "all day breakfast" place but they actually changes menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner time.

The popular pancake was on dinner menu so I could try it.
When it's served, it wasn't on a flat plate but almost like a shallow soup bowl.
It had mouthwatering flavor of butter on top.
The height/thickness of each slice was about 1~1.5cm (half inch).
Sides with 2 bananas.
Small jar of maple syrup: it's actually much nicer than the huge and yucky bottle always sitting on the table for anybody and anytime.
As it looked, the pancake was really soft and thick, but had light texture.
However, it was my first time to try ricotta cheese pancake, I couldn't tell if it's cooked well or not since the inside was a bit mushy and watery.

I realized I'm not a big fan of ricotta cheese pancake... but I ate most of it.

Everyone has different taste and preference, but personally I wouldn't get excited about their pancake anymore.

My summarize is;
> 30-60 minutes waiting
> non-professional service with kind of an attitude
> soft and spongy pancake
> fresh bananas
> maple syrup in a personal -sized small jar

My rating (out of 5);
*Service: 1.5
*Taste: 3.5
*Cost Performance: 2

I'd still love my pancake with Park Hyatt Delicatessen and their 100% maple syrup more than Bills.
It's the best because no need to wait nor ricotta cheese inside for sure.

Lunch Pack Collection:
Maple & Margarine

Canadian maple sugar was mixed into maple jelly filling.

It has intense maple flavor but not much of margarine.

It would be also tasty if it's toasted.

This is my 100th Lunch Pack Collection!!
Lunch Pack Collection:
Beef Cutlet with Sauce supervised by Tengu

"Tengu" is a well-established skewer cutlet shop in Osaka.

It's been in business for over 80 years.

The picture on the right top is a sauce case and you dip the skewer before eating.

However, you can only dip it once because everyone is using the same sauce can.

The message says,"No double-dip."
Lunch Pack Collection: Ratatouille

Tomato, eggplant, onion, and pepper.

I could feel tomato seeds on my tongue.

This is like paste ratatouille inside.

The fresh and veggie fragrance were so nice when I opened the bag.
Lunch Pack Collection:
Matcha Cocolate Bar & Uji Matcha Cream

*Matcha is green tea.

The bread is marble pattern with matcha.

Between the bread, there're matcha flavor chocolate bar and Uji matcha cream.

They use Morihan (a tea company)'s matcha cream.

The bread has light scent of matcha and the cream inside is bitter like the real matcha.

Matcha flavored chocolate is "oh-so-good"!!
Lunch Pack Collection:
Pear Jam & Whipped Cream

They use "Ichikawa no Nashi" (pear of Ichikawa city) of Chiba prefecture.

The jam is sweet and a little bit sour.

Once you put into your mouth, I could smell strong artficial pear flavor.
Lunch Pack Collection:
Double Cheddar with Whole Wheat Bread

Sliced cheddar with cheese cream which contains 90% of cheddar.

Toasted for 2-3 minutes and the cheese melted really well. Tasty.

I wanna put butter and grill in a pan to make grilled cheese!

On the right top picture, they're in Queen's Guard uniform as this is Cheddar cheese, which was originally created in Somerset, UK.
Lunch Pack Collection:
Look A La Mode (4 kinds of cream) "Pair Lunch Pack"

Collaborated with Fujiya's "Look A La Mode" for its 50th anniversary.

This "Pair Lunch Pack" is pressed in the middle so that you can tear it apart.

Thus, this lunch pack contains 4 individual fillings in each half-sized bread.

White bread contains strawberry cream and caramel cream each, then cocoa bread has banana cream and almond cream respectively.

I liked cocoa bread + almond cream the best!
Lunch Pack Collection: Egg

I've seen egg lunch pack but this package is NEW; each lunch pack is individually packed so you can eat one for now and later.

It's a clever idea.

You can share with somebody or save the other one for another time.

As each bread contained respectively, you can always have it both fresh :)

However, the tragedy occurred....

The backside said it's using "dressing" but it was totally mayonnaise so I spitted it out at once.

Anyway, I tried, so I'm posting this.
Choi Paku Rusk "French Toast Flavor"

This rusk is made from the crust of lunch pack bread.

So, it's like a recycle snack.

It was crispy and butter smelled really good.

Even thou it was only 100 yen, it had nice butter flavor and just right amount of sweetness.

About 50g (1 lbs.) and this could be a light snack.

I'm waiting for some other flavors come out!

100 yen.
