Ikinari Steak East Village

(Japanese follows. /

A Japanese standing-up-eating steak chain called "Ikinari Steak" has just opened in East Village today, February 23, 2017.
* Ikinari (いきなり) means suddenly, straight away.
The first restaurant was opened in Ginza, Tokyo in December 2013 and they're growing rapidly, and they opened their 100th location in Japan on August 2, 2016. (Some locations have a limited number of tables with chairs.)

I read that the restaurant opens at 11 AM after the opening ceremony, so we went there around 10:30 AM.
When we got there, there're crowds of media and some customers like us in front of the restaurant and the ceremony seemed to have just begun.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony, but instead of a pair of big scissors, Mr. Ichinose used a huge knife.
After the ceremony, they decided to open the restaurant a little bit early and let the customers come in at 10:50 AM.
There's no specific line to get inside, so we just followed others and flooded in with media groups.
As soon as we walked into the restaurant, a staff asked us how many in our group and took us to a table. --> Same in Japan.

Menu
During the ceremony, CEO Mr. Ichinose said that they'd use American beef in the states, and the choices of meat was less than those in Japan.

Comparison of the prices. *before tax
Fillet (200g/7.1 oz.): Japan = 1,700 JPY while USA = 22 dollars
Ribeye (300g/10.6 oz.): Japan = 1,950 JPY while USA = 27 dollars
If the rate is 100 JPY = 1 dollar, to make it simple, it's 1.29 ~ 1.38% more expensive in the states.

After a bit, another staff came by and took our order of drinks and side menu.
To order the steak, you need to take a numbered card at the table and bring it to the meat counter.

I ordered sirloin 200g and they cut it around 250g.
They asked me if I wanted smaller cut but as it has some fat that I don't eat, I just got the slice they cut. (The price was shown on the scale.)
Interesting note was that when an American staff sliced the meat and placed it over the plate on the scale, the fat was facing to me and a Japanese staff immediately said, "No, no, no!" then the American staff quickly changed the direction and placed the red meat towards me.
Actually the meat looked better when the red was facing to me.
When they asked how I would like the meat to be cooked, I said rare because while I'm eating, the meat tends to get cooked more on the iron plate so that I'd like to have rare first then medium-rare to medium by the time I finish the steak.

Upon returning to the table, we found our drinks and salad there.
Though it's in the states, they don't have Diet Coke but Coca-Cola Zero like Japan.

Mixed Salad (Small)
All the vegetables were crunchy and served icy cold.

This is the steak sauce in a pot and it said, "Shake it well" before using.

There're 2 kinds of dressing (onion, garlic), 3 kinds of seasonings (wasabi, mustard and garlic).
We put paper aprons set on the table while waiting for the steak.

In about 15 minutes or so, the steak was served.
It took them longer than what it did in Japan, but as it's the very first day of the restaurant, even filled with media groups, it's understandable.
Sirloin (249g)
The steak was placed over raw sliced onions and over the steak, there're garlic butter and garlic chips.
And there're sweet corns on the side.
I forgot to take photos of the inside of the steak, but it's perfectly cooked rare as I hoped while the outside was sizzling and lightly crispy because it's grilled over the fire.
The steak sauce was soy sauce based and the staff who brought the steak said not to pour on the iron plate directly as it'd evaporate and splash over.
The sauce is different from American steak sauce, and I'd say the flavor is less complicated and let you enjoy the meat.

We also ordered Garlic Pepper Rice (no photo), and it's served on a round iron skillet.
It consists of white rice, diced steaks, corns and black pepper with garlic (not chips but paste, I think), and we mixed it well.
It's heavily peppered and I liked it that way since the corns were sweet and the black pepper went well with the steak sauce that was already put in the iron plate.
It's similar to Beef Pepper Rice from Pepper Lunch but minus green onions and much less of steaks that are smaller.
Pepper Lunch is under Pepper Food Service Co., Ltd. that manages Ikinari Steak.

Because the concept is "standing-up-eating," there're storage box under the table and hooks to hang coats, also there're fordable lacks on the ground so that it's easy to place bags.
Compared to those restaurants where you can sit, it's cheaper and faster, and you can enjoy steaks more casually, besides you don't need to tip them as it's a Japanese chain.
You don't need a reservation and it's quite convenient when you crave some steak for your own or with a small group.
A friend of my husband said it's a no-chair version of Tad's Broiled Steaks but more expensive, and it's certainly true, yet the quality of the meat is higher here and you can choose the size and how you'd like it cooked based on your preference.
If they had no-garlic option, it'd make it easy to feel less worried about the breath afterwards.

Mr. Bobby Valentine was there as a special guest.

Ikinari Steak East Villate /
90 E. 10th St. New York, NY 10003
(On 4th Avenue)
Open every day: 11 AM ~ 11 PM
