Koikeya's Uko-n / 湖池屋のウコーン

Turmeric Flavored Suko-n Called "Uko-n" From Koikeya
ターメリックを使った湖池屋の「ウコーン」

Koikeya, Co., Ltd. is a Japanese confectionery and they launched "Uko-n" on December 9th, 2013.
My husband bought it for me when it's out, but I procrastinated trying this.

"Uko-n" Tandoori Chicken flavor.

"Uko-n" is pronounced "Woo Corn," not Yukon.
It's named after their popular and long-selling snack called "Suko-n," which is pronounced as "Sue Corn," launched back in 1987.
Suko-n is a crunchy and crispy corn snack and the shape is similar to Cheetos.

Why they used "Uko-n" for this new product was they used turmeric, and we also called it "Ukon."
Thus, they combined Suko-n and Ukon, then it became "Uko-n" but Koikeya denies it's not a play on words with red in the press release.

To summarize the press release, they launched Uko-n in December as the month is full of event like Christmas and year-end party so that they used curcumin, an element contained in turmeric and it's said curcumin strengthen the liver.
Per package (50g) contains 30mg of cucumin.
To support health、they created this tasty snack with turmeric powder.

On the back side, there's an explanation of the flavor and it's a mix of turmeric and original blended spice are over crispy and crunchy corn snack.

When I opened the package, it had very strong curry flavor, however, it's more like Kampo, a Japanese kampo medicine.

I tried a piece and it tasted similar to curry, but it's more tangy and tasted close to Kampo medicine as it smelled.
And this snack left mediciny, weird, and bitter taste in my mouth.

The texture was crunchy and crispy so that it was very enjoyable.
But it didn't taste like tandoori chicken at least, it tasted like bitter medicine.
I don't think it's one of those "bitter pills may have blessed effects."

Note: After a couple of pieces, I got used to the tangy and mediciny flavor, then the taste didn't bother me much and I enjoyed the texture.

2013年12月9日に湖池屋から「ウコーン」が発売された。
発売日に日本にいた旦那に買ってきてもらったものの、ずっと食べるのを先延ばしにしていた。
「ウコーン」はタンドリーチキン味。

「ウコーン」は、湖池屋の1987年発売以来ロングセラーのコーンスナック「スコーン」に
ウコンを使っていることをアピールした、ユニークなネーミングらしい。
スコーン ＋ ウコン ＝ ウコーン。
このネーミングの式について、プレスリリースでは赤文字で「決してダジャレではありません！」
と書いてあった。

また、プレスリリースをまとめると、12月はクリスマスや忘年会などのイベントが多く、
ウコンドリンクの含有成分として知られるクルクミンを一袋（50g）あたり30mg配合した
ウコーンを発売。
元気と健康をサポートする、おいしく食べられるウコンパウダー配合のスナック菓子。

裏面には、ウコン（ターメリック）とオリジナルブレンドスパイスが使われた、
カリッとサクッとしたお菓子と説明がある。

袋を開けると強いカレーの香りがしたけれど、カレーと言うよりは漢方のような薬臭い香り。

一つ食べてみるとカレーのような味はしたものの、舌にピリっとして香りと同様に漢方に近い。
口の中に薬のような変な苦味が残った。

食感はカリッとサクッとしていてとても良かったけれど、タンドリーチキンの味はせず、
苦い薬といった印象。
お菓子なのに「良薬は口に苦し」が合う苦味。ただし、良薬かどうかは分からない。

メモ： 数個食べた後はピリッとして薬っぽい味に慣れてきて、味はあまり気にならずに
サクサクの食感を楽しめた。
