Finally I Had Nestle "Peelin' Pops" In Montreal
モントリオールでやっとネスレの「ピーリン ポップス」を食べられた

Last year, 2013, when I was still in Japan, I heard Nestle would launch a limited quantity of banana shaped ice cream which you can peel the edible banana skin called "Nestle BEN NANA" on October 1.

Not only the edible peelable skin on the ice cream, it doesn't have any banana flavor despite the shape; the skin had white grape flavor and the inside was vanilla ice cream.
I really wanted to try but we never found it anywhere. 

According to some articles, this ice cream was first launched in Thailand in May 2010 as "Eskimo Monkey" and became very popular among children rapidly.
After the success in Thailand, this ice cream was brought to Malaysia in January 2011, and February it's available in Philippines named "Krazy Banana."
In March, Europe started releasing it, and in April, it rolled out in several countries.
Japan has been so behind from this trend (like 2yrs) and launched in a limited quantity (190,000 pcs).
Maybe the word "limited" was one of the marketing strategy as we're attracted to the magical term?
And also I realized that every place has different product name.

Anyways, we looked for that ice cream in NYC but we failed.
However, my husband found it in Montreal! Yay!!

Of course there's French definition as we're in Canada.

Individual banana-shaped ice cream was in this cute little bag.

When I took out the ice cream, it's covered with frost, so I rinsed this ice cream because I didn't wanna break or tear the skin before I enjoy peeling it off.

After rinsing off the frost, shiny skin showed up and I could see 4 subtle lines.

I was very afraid that I might rip the skin, but the skin was gummy and rubbery so that it came off pretty easily and it didn't even get any crack.

It looked like real banana especially the way the separated skins were drooping.

To my surprise, this Peelin' Pops has banana flavor not like the one in Japan!
The yellow skin was chewy and had a strong and weird banana taste which could have been created with artificial flavor. 
But inside, the white part tasted like milk ice cream mixed with vanilla ice cream though the package says "vanilla."

I loved the concept of this little banana shaped ice cream, but the skin tasted weird...
The texture was fine to me, it's just something new to me have gummy part on the ice cream.
This time I used my fingers to peel the skin off, but next time, I'd love to copy the monkey on the box and peel it off with my teeth.

昨年まだ日本に住んでる時、ネスレがバナナの形をしたアイス「ネスレ バンナナ」を
2013年10月1日に数量限定で発売すると聞いた。

そのアイスは本物のバナナのように皮を剥いて食べるデザイン。
ただし、その皮は食べられる素材でできているらしく、
驚くことに味はバナナの味がしないようで、
皮は白ぶどう味、中身はバニラアイスだったらしい。
残念ながら、見つけることはできずに諦めていた。

いくつか関連記事を読んでみたところ、
このアイスは2010年にタイ王国で「エスキモーモンキー (Eskimo Monkey)」として発売され、
瞬く間に子供たちの人気商品となった。
タイ王国でのヒットを受け、翌年2011年1月にはマレーシアでも発売され、
同年2月にはフィリピンで「クレイジーバナナ (Krazy Banana)」として発売。
欧州では同年3月に発売され、4月には数ヵ国で発売されることが決定した。
読んで分かったのは、日本での発売は約2年遅れで、しかも19万本限定発売だったと言うこと。
もしかしたら「限定」に弱い心理をついたマーケティングだったのかも？
各国で商品名が違うことにも気が付いた。

話は戻って、、、ニューヨークでも探してみたけれど、見つからなかった。
でも、旦那がモントリオールで見つけてくれたので、やっと食べられることに！
カナダで売られている物なので、英語と併せてフランス語表記もあり。

箱の中で、かわいい袋に1本ずつアイスが入っていた。
袋を開けると霜が沢山ついていたので、
皮を破らずに綺麗に剥きたかったので、水道水で霜を洗い流すことにした。
洗い流した後は、ツルッとした皮が表れ、うっすらと4本の線が見えて、
線に沿ってグミやゴムのような弾力がある皮を剥いていくと、
破れることなく、ヒビは入ることさえなく簡単に剥けた。
皮がベローンと垂れている様子が特に、本物のバナナにそっくり。

びっくりしたのは、このピーリン ポップスはちゃんとバナナの味がすること。
グミような食感の黄色い皮は、人工甘味料で作られたであろう不思議なバナナ味。
箱には「バニラ バナナ味」と表記されているけれど、
白い部分はバニラとミルクが混ぜられたすっきりしたミルクアイスと言った印象。

このアイスのアイディアはとても面白かったんだけれど、皮があまり美味しくない。。。
グミとアイスを一緒に食べたことがなかったので、「新しい食感」を楽しめた。
今回はバナナの皮を手で剥いたけれど、次回は箱のサルを真似して
皮を歯で剥いてみたいと思う。
