Arby's Jalapeño Hushpuppies
アービーズのハラペーニョ ハッシュパピー

Arby's launched "Jalapeño Hushpuppies" at the end of December, 2014 for a limited time.
It's launched with King's Hawaiian Fish Deluxe Sandwich, which should be available through Lent, early in April in 2015.
I'm not familiar with Lent, so I did some research.
It's a solemn religious observance of many Christians that begins on Ash Wednesday and covers a period of approximately six weeks before Easter Sunday.
Fasting during Lent was more severe in ancient times than today, and in some places, all animal products were strictly forbidden, while others will permit fish, others permit fish and fowl, others prohibit fruit and eggs, and still others eat only bread.
Thus, Arby's might have planned this promotional period of fish sandwich based on this custom.
Though I researched about Lent, I only got Jalapeño Hushpuppies.
To my husband's surprise, it's my first time ever to try hushpuppies so that I literally had no way to be biassed of the texture or flavor, so here's my genuinely first thought on hushpuppies.
There're 5 balls and I could see corns in the dough.
Each ball was about 3~4cm (1.2~1.6 inch) in diameter, so not that large.
Outside didn't have breading and was crispy, while inside was mushy but also dried.
The texture was similar to cornbread as the main ingredient for hushpuppies is cornmeal.
Corns added some sweetness and moist, and chopped jalapeños had a very subtle heat but it's immediately reduced by sweet corns and corneal which both had sweet flavor.
I don't think this can be a "Perfect Kick" like the ad says.
But other than cornmeal flavor, it didn't have flavor in the batter.
I'm not sure if hushpuppies are supposed to be like this plain, or no-taste to be frank, or just these were not seasoned well.
To me, hushpuppies were something crispy and greasy outside, and the texture inside was similar to Okara, soy pulp, which is dried yet mushy.

私は四句節（lent）に詳しくないので少し調べてみた。
四句節とはカトリック教会の宗教的行事で、復活祭の46日前にあたる「灰の水曜日」から
復活祭前日までの期間のことを指す。
46日前からである理由は日曜日を除いた40日間を数えるためで、この期間の特徴は断食
（食事および祝祭）と贖罪（しょくざい、罪滅ぼし）。
伝統的な3つの慣行は、祈り、断食、慈善で、それぞれ神、自分、隣人（他人）への悔い
改めとなっている。
古代の四句節の断食は全ての動物製品を禁じていたため、現代よりもずっと厳しいもの
だったようで、今日では魚は動物製品から除外する宗派、魚と鶏類は除外する宗派が存在
する一方で、卵と果物を禁じる宗派やパンだけを食べる宗派はど多岐に渡る。
恐らくアービーズはこの習慣の時期を見据え、フィッシュサンドイッチの発売時期を決定
したのだと思う。
四句節について色々調べたものの、今回フィッシュサンドイッチは買わず、ハラペーニョ
ハッシュパピーだけ購入。
旦那に驚かれたのだけれど、私はこれまでハッシュパピーという物を食べたことがない
ため、食感や風味がどんなものであるのか知識がないまま食べたので、ハッシュパピーが
どんなものかと感じた個人的な感想が以下。
紙の箱には5個のハッシュパピーが入っていて、生地の中にトウモロコシが見えた。
各ボールは直径が3〜4センチとそれほど大きくはなかった。
パン粉が付いていない外側はサクサクし、内側はぐしゃっとした食感がありながら乾燥
していてコーンブレッドに似ていた。
ハッシュパピーの主な材料はコーンミール（トウモロコシの粉）らしい。
トウモロコシが甘さと水分を足し、刻んだハラペーニョはほんの少しだけ辛さがあった
もののスイートコーンと生地自体の甘さで辛さはすぐに消えた。
広告に書かれているような「完璧なスパイシーさ」はなかった。
ただし、コーンミールの風味以外、生地にこれと言った味はなかった。
ハッシュパピーはこういう味なのか、それとも単にこのハッシュパピーがプレーンな
（はっきり言えば味がない）だけなのかは不明。
私にとってハッシュパピーは「サクサクして脂っこい外側と、おからのようなモソモソ
した中身」という印象だった。

There're traditionally 40 days in Lent which are characterized by fasting (both from foods and festivities) and by other acts of penance: The 3 traditional practices to be taken up with renewed vigor during Lent are prayer (justice towards God), fasting (justice towards self), and almsgiving (justice towards neighbor).
